Amazon Developing Free-to-Play LOTR MMO

  • No relation to the TV series.
  • Global publication and marketing suggests a huge budget.
  • Service model expert Leyou on board.

In addition to an original Lord of the Rings TV series, Amazon Game Studios has announced that it has partnered with Leyou Technologies Holdings Limited and Middle-earth Enterprises for the development of a free-to-play MMO set in Middle-earth. The game will be unrelated to the TV series, and will be developed for both PC and consoles.

Leyou will handle marketing and publishing for China, while Amazon will do the same for the rest of the world. There’s nothing close to a release date for the project yet, but we do have a few quotes from the people involved, such as this one from Christoph Hartmann, the vice president of Amazon Game Studios:

We’re committed to bringing customers games of the highest quality, both with our own original IP as well as beloved cultural pillars like The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien’s Middle-earth is one of the richest fictional worlds in history, and it gives our team of experienced MMO developers – from the same studio developing New World – tremendous opportunity to play and create. We have a strong leadership team in place to helm this new project, and we’re actively growing our team to help build this incredible experience

The CEO of Leyou, Alex Xu, had this to say:

Bringing Middle-earth to life necessitates having the very best partners, and Amazon’s customer obsession, technology, and talented teams make it the ideal choice for a co-developer and publisher. We believe our combined resources and expertise will result in a beautiful and compelling game that customers will love and play for years to come.

And the Chief Brand and Licensing Officer at Middle-earth Enterprises, Fredrica Drotos, said:

Who among us hasn’t wanted to take part in an epic adventure. More than 60 years after the publication of The Fellowship of the Ring, we’re delighted that Amazon Game Studios has partnered with Leyou to bring their respective expertise to build a much anticipated game that will immerse us in the beloved, epic world of Middle-earth, envisioned by Professor Tolkien

  1. This is some amazing news….i hope.

  2. Having read the books, the only area to go in that would grant artistic license is the Christopher Tolkien stuff like the previous MMO did.

  3. Lord of the Rings Online exists (Turbine). It went to the F2P model years and years ago and drove me away with the monetization F2P models have though it still has the “VIP” subs.

  4. Im enjoying the existing Lotro MMO right now. The early zones so far show an incredible attention to detail that makes it a joy to play at the same time, or shortly after having re-read the book. (fellowship)

I heard that this new MMO is going to be set thousands of years before the time of Bilbo, Frodo and Aragorn. Therefore i dont really see how different this would be from any other generic RPG setting unless you are a true tragic obsessed with the Noldor, Beleriand, Numenor etc. from the, for lack of a better term, “expanded universe” of Middle Earth.
