  • Pixelated RPG inspired by retro classics.

Developer Onion Games has announced that Dandy Dungeon: Legend of Brave Yamada is now available in PC via Steam for $18.99. Their pixelated retro-inspired RPG originally released for Nintendo Switch earlier this year on the 27th of June.

Dandy Dungeon: Legend of Brave Yamada’s story focuses on a 36 year old programmer at a major game publisher named Yamada-kun. Yamada-kun hates his job, and lives alone in his apartment. Late at night he typically tosses and turns as he struggles to create a game of his own. The title of the RPG he’s working on is Brave Yamada, and he’s the hero of the game. One day he meets his new neighbor Maria-chan, and falls in love with her at first sight. These feelings begin to grow, and it doesn’t take long until he creates Princess Maria in Brave Yamada.

There are many dungeons to complete. To clear a floor, you’ll need to use your controller and draw a path. The hero will then follow this path, and it’s your goal to get him from the entrance to the exit. Timing is everything to keep the hero alive, and you’ll have access to healing items and attack or defense spells. Clearing all floors in a dungeon will net you a rare treasure. If you’re able to clear all floors with a perfect path that has the hero travel upon every square, you’ll get a nice bonus. It’s easier said than done, as the dungeon floors are littered with treasures, traps, monsters, items, secrets and surprises.

Yamada-kun has also implemented a brand-new leaderboard system for players. This is the best way to determine who is the best Yamada-kun in the entire world. Players will be able to not only see who’s managed to get the highest scores; they’ll also be able to see what equipment was used. There are many different pieces of equipment to use, and players will need to find the perfect set that will elevate them to the top spot. The developers eagerly want you to show off your skills and clear each dungeon with a top score.

One of the best aspects of Dandy Dungeon: Legend of Brave Yamada, is the score created by Keiichi Sugiyama. The chiptunes elevate the art style, and amplify the retro feeling the developers are aiming for. The song in the trailer captures the tone of the game perfectly, allowing players to see that this has the potential to be a depressing experience. For those who played it on Nintendo Switch, did you like it? Would you recommend this title? To stay up to date, make sure to follow the developers on Twitter, Discord, and their official website.
