Well hello there, I'm another 20-something and I've been playing video games since my 5th birthday. I have never actually joined a gaming forum before, but as I like what the site seems to stand for I thought I would give this one a try.
These days I primarily play RPGs and Strategy games on the PC. Currently going through a phase where I feel the need to play through some of the classic RPGs I've missed. Right now going through Ultima series, just finished Ultima IV and moving on to Ultima V. So that's the exciting introduction about me, I guess let's see where this goes.

If you want something classic, that is a very much a JRPG of it's time. I'd have to recommend Legend of Legaia for the PS1. I'm gonna write a full review for it here shortly, but for the sake of this recommendation, it is very unique title in it's setting and it's game-play. So, you start out in a small coastal village named Rim Elm. I could make a rim job joke right now, but I'm not that clever. Surrounded by a tall ass wall to protect them FROM TITANS, nah it's mist. They hide from mist, because the mist enrage these entities known as 'Seru' and the Seru when provoked turn things into monsters. The mist also just pisses off real monsters too. SO, You start out as the main character whose default name is 'Van', with is cool blue hair and red vest. Then the wall breaks and Van releases a 'Ra-Seru' which he bonds with, to combat the mist and revive the Genesis Trees across the world. The world is a very mid-evil Japanese? There's castles and knights, but also Monks? It's very interesting. Other than that the battle system is incredibly different from regular JRPGs, or just turn based RPGs in general. So when you attack, instead of just attacking, you input directions: up, down, left, right. Based on specific combinations will unlock new Arts, which are special moves that do optimal damage. From there you can chain Arts, and come up with some fun chain combos. If you love gameplay and story, I'd highly recommend this title. Being a ps1 title, it's fucking dated as all hell. I still think it's a fantastic game.

Right now I would say Ultima 1-3 have almost no redeeming qualities for modern times, the only reason to play them is if you're interested in gaming history. Ultima IV is where it starts to get more interesting, and it definitely has some interesting concepts. Unfortunately, they're mixed with a lot of mindless, repetitive tedium. I'm happy I played it, but I would be very cautious to recommend it to anyone else, unless you're really hardcore into RPGs and don't mind dated mechanics. It's the games coming up though that the Ultima series usually gets the highest praise for, and unfortunately, as I haven't gotten around to them yet I'd need more time to get back to you on this. If you're really interested though Ultima VII is probably a safer bet. Again, I haven't played it yet, but it seems to be getting the most praise, and I'd imagine as a more recent entry is more accessible.
In the meantime, I'll throw a question back to your way. Since my brain seems to operate opposite to yours, with "Why is there anime in this?" I pretty much never played a JRPG. Got any good recommendations for someone like me to get started with?

Ayyyy, I already got blasted once for my 'vocab'. SO WUTS GUD? I'm new here too! Let's make great gaming memories for all to share together! I've never played any of the Ultima games. Should I? I'm afraid I won't appreciate it because my weeb brain will be firing off 'Why aren't there anime in this?' but hey. I played through both fallout games, and I like the old elder scrolls. So maybe? What you think buddy.
