I sent in an application back in mid December and haven't heard anything back. I'm sure they just got buried under the number of applications they have and probably far more qualified people than me that applied. Still it's one of those things that I simply wish I could get the acknowledgement that my email was received and reviewed. Maybe I should have put more polish on my writing example rather than something I wrote late at night and had to actually correct as I double checked and found I had been wrong about a few things.

I don't know how much I can tell you, but just know that I applied day one and just received a response from an editor on the 14th. The editor i'm working with has been very helpful in communications and the onboarding process. Everyone involved is busting their behinds to make this site happen. We use Chicago formatting if that helps any. I'm hoping to have the corner on JRPG reviews and content pieces once we launch, but right now we are focused elsewhere.

Thank you for the responses. Good luck on getting in JRPGs. I feel like western reviews of them have been by people that don't play JRPGs since... well FF9 and Gamepro having a preview that must have slipped past the editors and a later review by a different person that actually seemed to enjoy JRPGs. Heck GameInformer got called out for praising Undertale for things they bashed a Tales game for.

Don't know what niche I'll fall into, maybe if they pick me up I can do some reviews upon some older or less known games. My writing example I sent in is more "op-ed" territory.

Agreed. The best reviews come from people who have passion for the game they are covering. I tend to strongly prefer action RPGs like the Tales and Ys games, and I've submitted a pitch for a content series on little known eastern RPG series.

LOL, no. Dec 13. Still no reply.

It might be an unpopular opinion, but I expected this. Management issues, generally speaking.

The volume of applications is high, they're being sorted through fairly.

Any way we could get some more guidelines for our articles?
What format do you want them delivered in? PDF, Word, other?
I was told to add relevant photos, but was not told if I should include them in the article or just in the email.
How do you want references handle in the article?
Things that you are looking for?
          Thank you.

I imagine there were a lot of interested parties, sorting through it all will probably take a lot of work, especially when a big part of this is going to be writers representing the brand of EG whether by intention or not, therefore there has to be a lot of consideration based on the sort of content created and people responsible for its creation.

We are, by definition, outside of the mainstream at the moment, so to put the best foot forward, good content has to be made by authors who don't court controversy. Maintaining an apolitical neutral tone whilst being a very politically diverse crowd, and writing for an audience that crosses the entire spectrum is going to be difficult for the best of us.

With any luck, we will get our shot at writing if our content is up to scratch. I wish everyone else who has applied the best of luck, and hope it works out for both us, and the site in general.

I think I have a pretty good grip on the intentions, considering I'm currently producing content. If a game tackles real world issues, that is not inherently political and shall be mentioned in regard to the game's story. The closest thing I can think of might be noting on censorship should a version of a game receive censorship under threat. What do you mean when you mention a game being revisionist? If a game takes a look at history through the lens of fiction, like Wolfenstein, then it is not revising history it is more akin to historical fiction. As for presenting male characters as evil for the crime of being male...has this ever actually happened before? It sounds like a ludicrous hypothetical situation to me, and I don't care about hypothetical issues. Fortunately, I hope to focus on Japanese games coming to the west, and they are pretty actively avoiding political correctness. I think it is important to have distinction between philosophy and politics. There are games like This War of Mine that are deeply philosophical in nature, but until someone with an agenda gets involved from the outside (games journalists) the game is not necessarily pushing a political agenda. Even then it is the write up featuring agenda, not the game. The game is merely presenting an idea.

I have a question for you. Do you think it is pushing an agenda to be against game censorship?

          @midnight_Mogwai

Opposition to censorship of any kind is kind of my default position, is there an agenda there? probably, but so long as that agenda is maintaining the purity of the art as it was originally created, then that agenda should be an apolitical one.
Setting yourself against an attempt to control or alter art will automatically make you an enemy of the political ideology that seeks to change it, but that does not mean that you are endorsing the opposite political viewpoint.

A good approach to this could be, for example, getting the localised version of the Fire Emblem games, making mock-ups of the dialogue screens with the original dialogue restored (with the language and syntax changed to Anglophone speaking) and presenting the two, allowing the reader to determine for themselves which version of the product they would rather have.

An alternative viewpoint however, would be to do what I did with some of my work in the Armchair Game Dev articles, presenting an idealised alternative version of the games covered. Now some may call those ideas themselves censorship, but it comes not from a position of preaching a political message, but instead improving the work by presenting potential changes to the end product that makes the game play better.

It is more of a conundrum than I originally thought certainly, but casting my mind back 10 years, I remember being part of the GamePolitics forums (before they became a toxic wasteland) and one of the biggest things we were advocating against at the time was people like Jack Thompson trying to get games like GTA IV censored.
Given that this opposition to the censorship back then was a big part of our activism against figures like Thompson, I guess the position has to be considered a political one, but not political in the Left/Right divide, but overall just an opposition to an authoritarian system trying to exert control over something we loved. That doesn't align me with any one political movement, but it does set me in opposition to one.

You have given me a lot to think about here.

Anyone know if there will be an update soon? There was one hinted on for the end of this week but that's sorta come and gone by now. Why the delay?

Ya the most recent tweet does nothing to calm my nerves. Anyone that hasn't submitted something yet has an advantage here. Apparently they're in need of non video game gaming writers. I did not submit such material with my post so I'm...well... at a disadvantage to put it politely. For those that haven't submitted an application yet though (and obviously those that have a gaming but not necessarily strictly video gaming expertise) you'll probably be best served submitting an application with as much stated. I'm solid on PC hardware myself and probably should have mentioned that in my application so don't make the same mistake I did. Mention everything and be specific, professional, and apply detail. Good luck to all for those remaining 5-10 spots. Hopefully you're feeling better about your chances then I do right about now.

To a lot of people mentioning their lack of professional experience, there is only one way to get it. Personally, I hope to read all of it. Remember you guys n gals can only get better with time. Most people want to wait on an opportunity to get a foot in the door. Consider this that opportunity.

If you do end up posting in the forums, shoot me a message and I’ll give it a read (and my humble pointers)!

I doubt anyone is getting a reply at this point. I sent mine mid december, not a peep since. They are already finalizing the site and uploading content so I assume they are well past selecting writers.

                    Yea no reply yet sigh.

However it might be due to Jeremy not having time during the week, and the site was nowhere near ready until recently, so hopefully he starts going through the aplications now that the site is abount to launch, and the weekend is here.

From what it sounds like according to the IGG updates is that they've already got the writers and have around 50 or so articles written for the launch of the site. Jeremy himself isn't particularly involved with the articles and is leaving that mostly to the editors, at least that's how it was when he last streamed about the site. I wouldn't hold your breath for a response though, try posting some stuff of your own in the forums for the time being and if they like what they see you might hear from them in the future.

Ok sigh that sucks, sent in some amazing samples too. Yea naturally I would be doing that by default if they weren't accepting people for the site, so yea I'll most likely be doing so.

PS. it would be nice to get some kind of response though, even if just to say they have enough writers already, and aren't accepting anymore, instead of leaving everyone hanging.

I sent an application in twice, 20 yrs of writing experience including working on an indie game as a dialogue writer, no reply. I do have a blog I am going to start working on again. I'd be open to getting help putting content up...

Yea sigh, he/they should really be giving out replies, one way or the other, and in addition to such, if they have all the writers they are accepting atm, he needs to make a announcement on the forums.

Cool, yea I could help with that. Is there a specific theme, is it just general gaming or something else?
