What is up with the "comment" ability, why not just leave a normal reply?

Comments are to comment on the certain poster's opinion or wording instead of commenting on the original topic generally (which is by creating a new post)
OR
To leave a short reply.
All this is pretty handy and helps to avoid derailing also filters out most of "3 word"-posts,
If used appropriately, of course.

i agree. its a bit confusing and fucks up the flow of the traditional forum format.

It's a bit weird. I've never seen it on any other forum. There's another thread/topic about the same thing. I was temporarily incapable of finding it but now I've found it https://www.exclusivelygames.com/for...-with-comments Some people like it and some don't and some don't care. Mods, what's up?
