  • A rating system using your PSN, Steam or XBL ID.

You know that kind of guy that suggests things that maybe are completely impossible or unachievable but he's totally ignorant about that subject? That's me.

I hate webs like Metacritic where anybody can rate a game and f**k the score because they're fanboys of another console/company. That's why I always thought that it would be great to have a site like that but where you need to log in with your PSN, Steam or XBL account in order to review a game. Wanna say how bad some game is? Good, log in with an account where you played such game and you're allowed to do it. You don't have that game registered? Too bad, you can't even review it positively.

I don't know of something like this would be remotely possible, but I think that would be a great way to make a trusted review site. What do you think? Is that possible? Is it a good idea? Yes it is.

It's possible. Lots of sites use those platform APIs to let you login and can see certain information. I'd be OK with this system 100%.

Interesting idea but doesn't EG plan on curating the user reviews anyway

Owning the game doesn't guarantee a fair review either way, a fanboy will always be a fanboy and a hater will always be a hater.

Yeah, but it ensures the person actually owns the game and, thus, a higher likely hood they actually played the game unlike anonymously submitted user reviews that have no sort of authentication process.

Ryan And how would you deal with people with multiple accounts ? What prevents anyone from creating 25 accounts on his PS4 or Xbox ? And therefore being able to review-bomb a game while being "authenticated" ? And people who buy the game, leave 25 reviews and request a refund ?

Have you ever read reviews on XBL, PSN etc ?

5 Stars "tis game is asowme !!!"
          Yeah, relevancy !

Or reviews for games that aren't there yet ? (pre-orders)

Obviously the API has to support the ability to view what has been purchased by the user. It's not rocket science.

Agreed with Thomas_JCG . Take Fallout 76 for instance, for 99% of the people, the game was obviously a failure from the get go. So, who bought the game in the first 15 days ? Fanboys... with money to waste... These guys would have reviewed the game 9/10 even before the 20 minutes mark. Then you check the score and see several 9/10 : "oh maybe I was wrong and this game is in fact good ! Let's spend $60 !"
Owning a game doesn't mean you have a relevant opinion about this game, making a well thought out and worded review would be better IMO.

Ryan No one said it was the case, me neither. I said it was Jeremy's decision to have reviews curated. I've even said somewhere on this very page that he will have to pay people to do so. I'm not making that up, I think you would benefit greatly from watching Jeremy's own videos on the matter...

Soooo you've seen the video... soooo you know what is the purpose of this website... and how the creator has planned to achieve his goals... and you presumed he didn't know what he was doing, why he was wrong and why you're right...

You've seen the videos. You act presumptuous.

And yes, I presumed you didn't watch the video but do you know why ? Because if you had watched them and still propose your stupid plans it would mean that you're just a jerk, a know-it-all, someone who does nothing and gives advice to people who does. So yeah, I assumed you were ignorant rather than stupid as fuck... My bad I guess.

I think this is a good idea. After all, Steam already requires that you own a game on your account for you to review it in their reviews.

@Thomas: Yeah, that doesn't guarantee anything, but unless you're stupid (or filthy rich), you're not gonna buy a game on a system you don't own to play it for a minute and put a bad review.

I think you don't understand what I'm saying. When you check most fake profiles on Metacritic, you see things like the same person only reviewing two games, and giving a 10 to a popular PS4 game and a 0 to a popular XBO game. Saw that a lot with Uncharted 4 and Quantum Break. Or Gran Turismo and Forza. But you can find a million examples.

With a system like that, a troll that doesn't own another system wouldn't be able to downvote a game for a system they don't even own.

Blue Stinger: Owning and playing a game means you OWN AND PLAYED the game. Therefore that opinion is more importan than someone who doesn't own and never played the game. I don't care if they're fanboys or not.

Judging by your avatar, we both played Blue Stinger and your score will probably be very high because it seems that you're a big fan of the game, but I really disliked it back in the day. Would you trust my opinion better because I wasn't a Blue Stinger fanboy? No, nobody should care about that. The important thing is having as many opinions possible, from fanboys or not, but at least from people who PLAYED the game.

I'm still playing Blue Stinger to this day, I speedrun the game, I've made a website, a youtube channel, a Discord server and I even drink my coffee in a Blue Stinger mug ! Was Blue Stinger perfect ? No. Did it have flaws ? Yes. Would I give it 5 stars ? No. Am I a "fanboy" ? Hell yeah !!!!

There is fanboy and fanboy... I'm not talking about "normal" fanboys, I'm talking about blind fanboys... The kind of fanboys who actively seek out all videos on Youtube to leave dislikes if the reviewer didn't give 5 stars to their favorite game.

I seek out every single Blue Stinger video, go ahead you can check there is a 90% chance that I left a comment on any Blue Stinger video you will come across (YT username : Jerome VV). Do you think you're the only one disliking Blue Stinger ? Hell no !!! This game was advertised as a survival horror by journalists so people were utterly disappointed. This game is vastly disliked, yet, I respect everyone's opinion. Go ahead, you can check. Those videos are watched by very few people, most of the time the only comment is mine, 90% of the time the person says bad thing about BS and I never left a dislike to any of them, ever.

But if you think all fanboys are like me...

So, I've played this game more than anyone else in the world, and if you buy a used copy, install it on your console and your opinion worth as much as mine ? It shouldn't. And that's why demanding people to say why they like/dislike/loved/hated a game isn't too much to ask and it's the best way to get the most relevant results.

Try something for a day, reply to comment by stars... If you didn't like the comment at all, you just comment "1 star" and if you agree 100%, you comment "5 stars"... You should understand pretty quick why reviews without explanation are pointless... Curated reviews that will be well thought out and well written will be the best asset of this website, if you want something else, Xbox dashboard, PSN, Steam, Nintendo Store and other websites got you covered ! Have fun over there !

I personally like how Steam does reviews, either you give a positive review or negative review, it binary, along with fact of having to own the actual game. Some might say it makes the rating system less accurate than a number system, but I don't really find that a bad thing, because since its less accurate and you know its less accurate, then I feel like you are more willing to look at the reviews and a get a deep understanding on the score than a number system. I personally will look at a number score and usually never actually check the reviews. On Steam, however, If I see a game I'm interested in and it has mostly negative reviews, I am more likely to check the reviews, because of that binary system and less accurate system, it almost forces you to dig deeper into what the reviews say if you want to get a more accurate reading on the score it's self. I alo like fact that Steam doesn't have a critic rating, rather it treats everyone's opinions the same.
If you like me, that's great! If you hate me, that's cool, just don't hide it.

Changing my mind about someone else's decision ?! Jeremy took this decision, this is a fact, I pointed it out and somehow it's my opinion ?! So, if I change my mind about gravity I would be able to fly ? Or facts don't care and can't change depending on my opinion ?

You're literally fighting against a fact here, a fact that I've no control over and somehow, you were trying to change my mind ? Gravity is a thing, if you want to be able to fly, try to change my mind !

I do like the way steam handles reviews, with recent-average-overall as well as showing how many hours a player has spent on the game, as well as showing how many people found the review helpful, the Xbox games store does something similar, having a resource to aggregate these reviews instead of the way metacritic does it would be great.

It says a lot that almost all the VC/MTX options in games on the xbox store have 1 star ratings.

Nah, everything is perfect over there... I mean, Metal Gear Survive got 4.5 stars out of 5 for two months on the Xbox store but I don't let facts influence my opinion so...
4.5/5 stars for two months then it dropped, what does that mean ? It means that some people saw the 4.5/5 and thought it would be a good game, bought it and then gave it a more accurate score. They lost $40-60 in the process, sent the wrong message to the industry by buying this piece of trash and therefore making gaming shittier for years to come but I've read somewhere that this was the ultimate way to review games... and that would be a good idea for this site...

I honestly think its a great idea. Possible of course. But each system PSN/XBOX/Steam have their limitations on what you can do with their api.
However in the end, the user review has to be properly written and not just pure gibberish if you know what I mean.

That's how it always begins...and then popularity hits, the site grows and suddenly the control isn't as tight or neutral as was originally intended. The gatekeeper of these opinion pieces is still just a human with their own opinions.

And sometimes it starts differently and there's no one to say "and then popularity hits" because how do you get popular if you offer something that's already out there and popular ? You don't, so even it's destined to "fail" in the meantime you can achieve popularity !
