  • PC Gaming Neophyte Needs Hardware/Software Advice to Play Modded Fallout:New Vegas

I wish that section existed so I could put this post in there. Anyway, I've tried getting help elsewhere but you can guess how helpful tech forums can be about building a PC. I'm hoping to have better luck here.

I LOVE Fallout: New Vegas. Enough to dump money into a gaming PC (Or laptop. Those seem like a waste of money though.) Despite all the bugs when I first played it, the open world that felt like I was making a true difference in... it hooked me. It was actually the first RPG that reeled me in for over 1000 hours and multiple playthroughs and playstyles. However, almost nothing about its core gameplay holds up today besides the RPG elements. I have seen people play modded versions of F:NV both on FO4 and a heavily modded F:NV. I'm not sure which is best.

I also don't have a clue about what kind of PC to get, what hardware I need, or what mods/software I need to make the game look awesome and maybe have the FO4 gunplay.

So where would I even start? Any input and suggestions are welcome. You'd be helping an escapism fantasy of mine come true. Thanks in advance.

I loved playing Fallout New Vegas both modded and vanilla on PC. I have been building computers since Windows 3.1 was out, so I know a bit about them (Also have BS in Electronics). I also sprang for the Life-time membership at NexusMods, so I completely understand your concerns.

When I get ready to build a new computer, I go to Newegg.com and TigerDirect.com and look for the newest, most expensive computer they offer. Now I can't afford that, but I look for the trends and the specs of that computer. Once I know that, I shop like crazy to find parts as close as I can afford. If you just want to buy a new computer, they should have something in your price range that will work great. I purchased a new gaming laptop for my son for Christmas at Newegg. Shhhh , don't tell him.

As for mods, check NexusMods under the most frequently used and YouTube for a gamer named Gopher. His Fallout New Vegas looked pretty good and he lists the mods he uses including the ones he wrote. He also has a series on Vortex to help keep the mods straight. I used Vortex the last time I played Fallout 4.

    Hope that helped.

Thanks a lot! Seriously. This is a good starting point

To make a recommendation you need two things:

    Your Budget
    Intended Uses

With that it's pretty straight forward to give advice.

      Budget: around $1000-$1500
Expectations: longevity and high enough performance to run New Vegas with mods without constant crashing. I don't care about 4k res or anything like that. Performance and longevity.

Use quotes, not comments please. Can'treply to a comment.

anyway, with that budget you can splurge a little. An 8700k or 2700x would be good CPU choices, a Vega 56 would be a good GPU choice.

I'd say, it would be better to post such thread in the "Video Games", and then create a thread here suggesting the "hardware/software" section with a reference to your post, until we actually have a dedicated section.

Kudos to you for mentioning previous suggestions of others !

I'll add this one to the collection of all the similar suggestions here:
    https://www.exclusivelygames.com/for...rdware-section

    This contains my personal opinion.
    I'm not a mod.

I am assuming here you want as much performance for as little as possible and your not an overclocker etc.
Ryzen 2600X(better IPC then none X)get a 1070ti or 580(8GB) from EVGA/ASUS etc, 16GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200mhz(Ryzen infinity fabric runs of the memory clock speed), a good X470 motherboard from EVGA/MSI or ASUS(i am using ASUS X370 Gaming F on my NAS) m.2 drive for windows and page file something like a 960 EVO but ensure you do not purchase a SATA those are much slower.
Gaming drive a nice 240/500GB SSD drive since you want to run modded games will help with load times, Crucial/Samsung/Adata have great drives.
CPU cooler you can go stock cooler if you're not overclocking that is if you do a Coolermaster Hyper 212 but I prefer the one I am using currently a Gelid Phantom Black, 200 TDP complete overkill but I do not even hear it on overclocking. PSU a Coolermaster RMX series 750 or an EVGA G2 or G3 750 PSU, both are gold rated with headroom if you ever upgrade for instance the GPU and come with 10-year warranty's.
PC case all depends if you want a panel but a Meshify C has different variants and they have a great price to feature ratio.

Thanks. I am using this as sort of a template for my shopping list.

I started a play through a couple of weeks ago with over 80 active plugins and this helped me go from CTDs every 20-40 minutes to playing for 2-3 hours with no crashes or freezing.

I haven't used Vortex yet but it's been my experience that FOMM worked better than NMM for FO3 & FNV,
This is a FOMM fork that is relatively new (last update was a week ago) and works fine for me.

Gopher's video are some of the best.
Gamer Poets also has some good informational videos.
      I game, therefore I am.

Very helpful for when I'm up and running. The lack of optimization in this game has me worried but I know people have found ways around that.
