I was wondering if having a section for opinion pieces or essays would be a good idea. This could give users a place to write long and in depth essays about a game or a topic in the game industry and have other users discuss the writers opinion. I know for myself I have a few essay topics that I wouldn't mind writing and posting but as of now there isn't really a good place or section for that on here or really anywhere else. What do you all think?

That's a good idea.
There would have to be guidelines for the submissions and it would add a lot more work though.
In the future it may be more viable as the company get into a nice flow and is ready to add more to their plate. -
I just registered to post this exact suggestion. Glad other people are thinking the same thing. Long form game analysis is where it's at.
Checking out the Forum, I wasn't even going to bother joining when I saw there was only "General Gaming > Video Games" and "Community Content > User Reviews" to post under. I know the point of the site architecture is to make sure the content doesn't drift into nonsense or the forum subjects don't become too numerous and disparate, but still.
The potential for content and discussion could be massive : Long form plot analysis, discussion of game mechanics, ideas on how games could be improved, et cetera. Just considering the possible topics is making me want to start writing.
Anyway, there's a lot that doesn't fall under "News" or the "Play Pause Pass" system. Maybe give it some thought.Comment

This was one of the first things I thought of when the website was announced. I don't know of too many places that have a dedicated essay section for games or game industry topics. If we could get a section on the forum moderated for user generated essays than I think we would be good, though that would take time and resources so have to wait and see what happens. Got my fingers crossed for something of the sorts. -

Yeah, I can't imagine a mainstream site with a long form section that wouldn't immediately devolve into political opinion pieces or "How Super Mario Bros Scarred Me For Life" level stuff. Probably because it naturally requires a bit of thought and intellectual curiosity, but hopefully this can be the place for it instead.
If you're looking for anything of the sort in the meantime, Shamus over at http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/ does some great work in this vein. It's explicitly no-politics and a great community. Only one guy producing the content, though, and it's high quality ( he's written for The Escapist quite a few years )but there's only so much one guy can write, ya know? And the comment system makes discussion kinda difficult, but it's the only solid place I've found for this sorta stuff so far.
