Selection of admins and Moderators

I think one of the inherently worst things a large gaming community site can do is start leveraging leadership as a reward. Specifically being tied to money or activity, this creates the disillusion that if you spam enough posts, or send in enough money than you get to have a role in leadership.

I generally hope for the sake of this community that the leadership roles are given to people who are good leaders, and that there is a complete training to attend rather than just a blessing of power.

Truth. It's not a big issue now, but this needs to change soon.

Mods are not leaders, they are customer service employees, "social workers".
They are here to ensure that you're having a good time with the forum , etc.

The leader might be a Community Manager at very least.

The post contains a suggestion related to the forum and raises the question for the people to answer commenting on this.

The suggestion in general is :

I'm not sure if this is a place for this thread to be posted. It's not really a question or a suggestion, but more an opinion, maybe this forum needs a misc section.

I could be very wrong, just this thread might be seen as a finger wagging to staff that know how to run this forum, so far they have done a good job, please don't bolt before the horse has left the stable.

It's definitely not finger wagging considering the current staff are unknown to most everyone here and these forums are at best just a couple of months old, which means they haven't been selected for putting money in or spamming posts.

Also, this is a suggestion, but I guess that didn't come through in my post. My suggestions are :

- Ensuring that admins and mods are picked based on actual leadership ability. Not monetary or community contributions.

- Creating a training program to ensure consistency among leaders.

I wasn't trying to imply, that a person who gets sick pleasures from ordering things (aka. "Keeping things in order") is necessarily on a powertrip. I agree with your sentiment, I just don't feel that it works as a counterargument to what I said ^^' Maybe it's my fault though, Sarcasm of any sort is difficult to convey through text.

EDIT: Maybe I oughta point out, that a moderators first job is not keeping the trolls away, which is certainly part of it, but making sure that things (like posts and topics) are where they belong, in the right subforum, taking care of doubleposts by merging them into one, and the like.

I don't know about that. I would rather the moderators not be on a power trip. The best kind of leader is someone who doesn't want to be corrupted by power but takes the responsibility because they want to help the community.

Based on my experience of running a game server/forum. Motivation is a massive boon to moderation, but also requires a balanced individual.
Motivation can be diluted, if the staff member feels a little left out.

Not a easy task to both motivate or get a balanced individual that are not directly tied to people running site. Often lost moderator due to lack of motivation.

Thing to remember if a mod or admin gets too powerful and seems a bit gun ho, usually the community will let them/forum owner know, so not worried about rogue staff.

I don't see a moderator as a leader. Best moderators are people who serve the community, not be served. The role is supposed to be about keeping things running on a stable footing without being heavy-handed.
