One of the reason I prefer to use emulators (even if I own the game, honestly), is the convenience features. Fast forward and save states are so useful. For some games they feel downright essential, not having them is like trying to read a book without a bookmark.

I missed my chance to get a download of Smash Melee from emu paradise before Nintendo had them take it down. :'(

I would say there is nothing wrong with using emulators... they are not illegal and if you have 2 or more tv setups having one set with original consoles and other with raspberry pi with emulators just for ease of use makes sense in my opinion. I personally have never used emulators but i would only use emulator to play games i already own. Also some games are better emulated

Emulate for 2 reasons in my opinion.
1st reason-can't access the game. Either because it's no longer distributed, or the console itself if decaying, then yeah go right ahead.
2nd reason-you already own the game/console. This one is a bit more sketchy, but if you already paid to play a game, should it really matter if you're playing it on a different system? Especially for things that never got a pc release.

I think it would be impossible to come up with a legal framework which would suit everyone. My personal opinion is do whatever you like if it's something you can no longer buy - as long as you're not making money from it. Many IP owners have been turning a blind eye to MAME for years, whilst the project did hold back some releases until a certain number of years at the request of the owner. That doesn't mean that at 5 years it became "legal", it just meant that if nobody was causing a problem then they were unlikely to be sued for it.

I'd be in favour of drastically reducing copyright terms.

What are people's exact thoughts on emulation? I think that if a console is no longer supported by the developer and new games can't be bought anymore (thus the companies aren't losing any money since only used games are really available), emulation of those consoles/games should be legal. Most of the more recent consoles there are nowhere near enough games I'm interested in to justify buying even one. PS3 I'm mostly interested in just RDR and the Ratchet & Clank games. Gamecube/Wii mostly because of Skies of Arcadia since Dreamcast emulation seems to have stalled, the only DC ISO's available are ones that were cut to fit on 700MB discs and SEGA is developing a Dreamcast emulator exclusively for the Switch. I own Halo 1 and the Games For Windows Live version of Halo 2 for PC, never gotten to play Halo3, XBOX360 emulator is exclusively for Windows 10. Have the first Gears of War for PC, rest of the games were cancelled for PC over claims of piracy.

It's a shame so many of the dumps of games for both of these systems are modified by crackers. I re-dumped my entire C64 tape collection because I was so fed up of not having 'standard' unfixed/modified images to work with. Over 1000 TAP files, it became my second job every evening for many weeks, and yes they've all been released into the wild.

I noticed the nvidea shield tv 10 has been popular among the gaming community on youtube. Its something I might look in to and would be great for local co op.

My girlfriend bought me a Raspberry Pi 3b earlier this year and it came with Retro Pi pre-installed and 2 Snes controllers.
I've been too lazy to set it up, but plan to tinker with it in the boring months of January and February.

If any of you plays on Xbox One, there's an online emulator called NESbox that is pretty cool. It runs on the console's web browser, you just need to dump the roms to a OneDrive account and then grant the emulator access to it. I don't remember finding any rom that had issues and they seemed to run pretty cool. It supports (as far as I know) NES, SNES, GB and GBA, Genesis/Mega Drive and Master System. And maybe also others, but haven't tried.

I used to emulate mostly around when the NES/SNES/MegaDrive became popular, so I would use emulators like Nesticle, ZSNES and Genecyst. This was decades ago however.

I used to emulate Pokemon and N64 games back in the day. Had a lot of good times with Pokemon Crystal in particular, great RPG. And on the Nintendo DS I owned one of those cartridges that could store DS games and emulate SNES/NES classics. Pretty insane for a little machine like that.

Are we really at the stage where a Wii can be emulated on a mobile phone?! My macbook pro lags when emulating a 3DS...
