I would recommend EverGrace on PS2. It's like darksouls in the 0.01 alpha stage. Made by fromsoft, so you'll notice the similarities!

    retro or classic?

retro is a new game with an intentional old design
classic is an old, good game

    if you meant retro, then:

    Ion Maiden
still in early access, but is supposed to be released in Q2 of '19

Also available on steam. Don't know how it's held up, it was surprisingly enjoyable at the time, would be cool if they remastered it. I mean MediEvil is getting remastered. On that note, would like to see Psychonauts get remastered as well. Although interested to see how the sequel pans out next year.

Also recommend Armed and Dangerous (parodies of classic movies) and Stubbs the Zombie Rebel Without a Pulse. Wiki both for plots.

if you're willing to go all the way back to SNES, Robotrek is an amazing JRPG that never got any real traction. No idea why because I'd rank it right below the lufia games in terms of gameplay. Also, the lufia games are awesome. Lufia 2 has a full RPG storyline AND a 99 level randomly generated dungeon system, which operates as a roguelike within the game itself. It's the only time I've ever seen a roguelike on the snes.

There is a Resident Evil like game (gameplay wise, not horror) on PS1 I absolutely love called Hard Edge (or T.R.A.G. in the US), it's an anime style cyberpunk game.

Dual Orb II, a JRPG on the Super Nintendo that was never officially released in English. I think it's obscure because other than myself, I've never heard anyone else mention the game before.

There are never enough submarine games. In Sub Culture you play as one that's about the size of a bottlecap, as a member of a tiny society of miniature underwater people living in what is probably just a pond. What's funny is that sometimes you'll come across stuff that humans have thrown into the pond. Aluminium foil and pennies can be hauled to metal refineries and cigarette butts can be sold to shady people extracing illicit substances out of them. The game has a day/night cycle and the bottom gets really creepy during the night.
