Difficult question.
On one hand there is the Metroid franchise because of gameplay, story, and Samus. I hope that there will be another part that continues after Metroid Fusion with the Federation declaring Samus a threat or something like that after she destroyed their bioweapons labs twice. Or maybe a Metroid part set in the time before she became the bounty hunter she is e.g. set in the timeline of the manga.
On the other hand… Touhou! I fucking love Touhou! Birdbrain, Catgirls, Masochistic celestial and the permanently drunk oni! TOUHOU!

My vote goes to Thief 2 The Metal Age. When that game was released it took the genre defining work done in the original Thief game, and perfected it. In addition to having a tremendous campaign, there are also a ton of user created levels to play. Man, I love that game.

If we are talking Retro:
Metroid. Getting to the end and having Samus take off her armor was like "WHAAAA?!?"
If we are going more modern, then I probably agree with all the Witcher 3 votes.

Having to go to page 3 to see Diablo 2 almost invalidates this forum! Nice save my guy

Diablo 2 for me. That game had everything. It's a little outdated now but for me was a great game. Next one would be Dota for Warcraft 3, i played that game for almost 10 years.

I want to say Chrono Trigger but I also want to say Morrowind, dont know cant decide. I do believe that Planetside 2 is the best multiplayer game ever made though. I just love how hectic that game can get nothing compares.

I forgot SimCity. So SimCity, Civilization, and Ultima. You put whatever numbers you want after those titles, depending on how old you are.

Akumajo Dracula X: Chi no Rondo. The only thing I would change is to make it a little bit harder, which they did with the PSP remake. Unfortunately, it was also the last real Castlevania.

GTA San Andreas.
Maybe that's a casual normie choice, I dunno. You can pick up a copy of it for about 20p.
However.. I can't tell you how excited I was when it came out, having played GTA III and Vice City solidly.. you could finally swim! The map seemed huge for the time. The story was so much fun (remember when games were fun?) .. and you got to fly a plane...an actual plane! You had a great variety of terrain to wander around, tons of stuff to do, not a game you could just rush through in a couple hours and be done. The ability to improve your characters stats. James Woods and Sam L Jackson on board to add some gravitas with their voice acting (along with a bunch of other famous people who all did a pretty great job)
Plus an awesome soundtrack as with most GTA games. I'm a pretty big music nerd who is into a lot of the genres Rockstar plumbs to get licensed content from (hip hop, jazz, classical, old school death metal..). Yet almost the whole time I was playing San Andreas I was tuned into the country station. It somehow made the perfect soundtrack to the game (not least that for most of it you are spent in the middle of nowhere).
Now I did love GTA IV too, and GTA V slightly less so (after 2010 most games just look like interactive movies to me... not cool). But I am saying if Rockstar had pulled the plug on the franchise after San Andreas, they would not have left anything in the locker room. In fact, I kinda want to go play it again now...as video games go, it's like a warm comfort blanket...full of mindless gangsta violence, naturally.

For me, it's Ocarina of Time, though Breath of the Wild is a very close second.

My point was that they are all Immersive Sims and each one has a specific focus. Deus Ex has a great story and worldbuilding and a wide range of player choice even though its mechanics are clunky and terrible. System Shock 2 is all about the atmosphere and tension. Thief 2 is the one with the great mechanics and peerless level design even though its story is meh.Originally posted by MadMummy76 View Post
It was allright I guess, but the medieval theme always takes a back seat for me over cyberpunk, or other modern day games.

You can't mention those two without mentioning Thief 2: The Metal Age
