I already purchased the original Fallout games for PC (prior to Fallout 3) long ago in a Steam bundle sale, I think anyone who was actually interested in those games would also have them by now as well. It's like the canvas / nylon bag thing - throwing a few virtual coins or assets at people costs Bethesda absolutely nothing, they didn't even develop those games but just seemed to acquire them and I'm sure have long since recouped any cost they may have incurred in the process.
I initially came to Oblivion / Fallout 3 on PS3 and was inevitably frustrated by the bugs, and when I realised they were never going to fix these bugs (there wasn't even access to the console to work around them) I lost faith in Bethesda there and then. I have since acquired Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 4 on PC purely so that I can use the console and mods to make the games far more than they were originally, and they're a brilliant thing once fully modded up just the way I want them. If I see Fallout 3 at a bargain basement price (e.g. on DVD in a charity shop) I will acquire that as well and get to work on the modding / fixing to make it like a whole new experience even though I've previously played through the game on console.
Nope, Fallout 76 is not for me, I don't think there is anything Bethesda could do to get me to even want to play it let alone pay real money for it. When a game such as this contains microtransactions it should be free to play or very cheap to buy, paying full game price should unlock ALL assets in the game (DLC excluded, but then ALL assets in that DLC should be unlocked with that particular purchase). It should be one price model or the other, not both. I'd much rather spend my time making use of the excellent modding communities' efforts to bring good games like Oblivion and Skyrim up to date and looking / playing in ways that Bethesda never would, as this is apparently not possible with Fallout 76 or any future game that works along the same lines then I don't want to be involved.
As for future Bethesda releases, if modding is allowed and encouraged then I might be tempted to invest in them, but not until all major bugs have been fixed one way or another, and I certainly won't be paying Bethesda full price for a buggy product even if free patches become available at some point after launch.

Bethesda used to have a huge amount of fans and modders, the modders were a necessity because of the bugs but bethesda are apparently banning people who use mods in FO76.
bethesda are using the remaining fans to protect them and are milking them for everything they can.
Companies are bad but bethesda are trying to show them how things are done.

The "old game giveaway" is two things:
1) "Stop crying and look at daddy's shiny, jiggling keys. Just ignore the fact that your favorite toy doesn't work correctly and mommy is quietly disposing of it before Christmas - just like your puppy that went to live on a farm."
2) Anybody who bought the game for PC via download directly from Bethesda instead of any other vendor got these games for free. Those of us (like me) who pre-ordered FO76 from BestBuy for FULL PRICE in JUNE did not get offered these games for "free". I already have them on disk somewhere, but I was really, really pissed when they said they were only giving them to people who bought direct. Now they are giving them to anyone who bought the game for PC.
It is all part of Bethesda's on-going drip-drip-drip of utter disregard and disrespect for its customers and long-time fan base. There is no pro-active effort by Bethesda to correct this disservice to the gaming public. They only re-act, and then, only after the blow-back gets so bad it starts showing up in the main-stream media. (The shill gaming media doesn't seem to count.) Almost all of their "updates" have been directly related to making sure their micro-transaction stream remains functional and that players are forced into considering making micro purchases. The big bugs have not been fixed! The game is still unplayable by any reasonable definition. The big bugs are things that even minimal play testing during a REAL BETA - even a short one - would have found. There were zero QA dollars spent on this game. They expect people who paid for the game to find the bugs for free and smile while they are doing it.
I know many thousands of people have looked a the Fallout 76 sub reddit, but you really should look at the Bethesda.net support forum. You will not find any happy people posting there. The only positive posts are from the standard fan boy and fan girl apologist you see in every gaming forum. There is all but dead silence from the community managers and admins in the support forum. If they say anything, it's only minimal "there, there" lip service. Bethesda promised to start actually communicating with us, but they are not. They are talking at us and past us. We are not the audience for their actions - their shareholders and board are the only people they seem to care about pleasing.
I have played the Fallout games for thousands of hours. I stopped playing FO76 after the first "update". The game was never finished. It was never tested. It is still too broken to play. Anybody who is still playing it either has a vested interest in it's success, or they are kids with no responsibilities who don't mind wasting their time starting over and over and over and over.
I can go on about this for hours - and have - you can read the 130+ posts I put up in the support forum. Bethesda is completely tone deaf. It's time for those gamers who have yet to grow a spine to start voting with their wallets.

The only reason bethesda is still going is because of modders.
Bethesda have been relying on modders for a decade just to make their games playable. I loved TES and FO but now im going to pause and think before buying their games.
Hopefully they dont mess up the dishonored series but you never know i guess.
Whaats even more insulting is the lack of communication with players and the gaming community as a whole. For some bizarre reason some of the players are actually defending bethesda.

I completely agree. Removing content? Take a look at Daggerfall (elderscrolls 2). It had more RPG elements and content than any elderscrolls yet. I believe it has to do with the fact Tod Howard wasnt the mastermind behind it.Originally posted by twidget View PostOffering old games for free, like $5 worth of store currency, fits the pattern Bethesda has been following.
Bethesda has been simplifying (dumbing down) games since TES III and FO3.
Each new game has fewer features and presumably less cost to the developer.
The only constant are the bugs that Bethesda couldn't be bothered to fix (it costs money to fix) before or after a game's launch.
If not for modders fixing Bethesda's buggy bullshit and adding just tons of content, starting with Morrowind, would Bethesda still have been in business long enough to create Skyrim?
And that last straw is TES VI and the space game will be crap from the start because with all the good engines to choose from Bethesda is sticking with what's easy, the Creation Engine.
It'll get new batteries for it's pacemaker and then it's "Once more unto the breach...".
There is no reason Bethesda should release a new game using a 8-10 yr old? engine. (i am not sure how old the engine is they said they would use) This is thoroughly upsetting knowing there are engines out there a generation ahead. Im not saying Skyrim wasnt a beautiful game. It was and still is BUT if your going to announce a game in developing and you drop a bomb like using an outdated engine your going to get negative feedback...

At this point I believe Tod Howard would come out and say "Bethesda has messed up. To make it up to you guys, we are going to give you all a free download of Daggerfall if you buy the Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76 bundle!"
-
Oh i totally agree this is a paper thin ploy, handing out old games that they didn't even make but still own the rights to, exclusively to a player base that is being the most critical of their game and would be most likely to still play Fallout 1 &2, in a desperate effort to get out of the spot light.
I can tell you that my friend has bought fallout 76 and watching him play is BORING. Along with the latest contovicy around the Nuke Black rum. a few friends who bough that are LIVID.

@crimsonkale
I actually thought of this to. Which is why if you want to make a better attempt at a apology, you would offer games on all 3 platforms.
This also is why i am lead to believe this is a ploy to sell more fallout 76 games than "applogize" to the gamers.. Bethesda has plenty of backlog to offer. I didnt see a reason why they had to pick those 3 games specifically...

Haha
It's okay, the forum layout is still not perfect, no "guide" stickies can be found as well.

If i had to guess it is because they would have to port those old games to the Xbox and PS4 and that would take time and effort which the 76 team seems not to have. Seeing how when fallout 76 was releases the controls were CLEARLY set up for the Xbox/PS4 controls and the PC port was copy paste, we can infer that they spent no time porting the game to accommodate PC. By comparison it would take effort and time to port them to Xbox/PS4 as the controls for those systems are simpler. they aren't offering them to Xbox/PS4 users because its to much effort.

I'm conflicted. While I think that Bethesda owes the people who paid for Failout 76, I don't think these are adequate to lure new customers. If you're contemplating buying it (not OP just anyone reading) Please do not be lured by this lazy tactic.

FO76 is the culmination of this.
Bethesda is out for your money and cares fuck all about producing a product worth the money.
Creation Club, while maybe good for console players, is an abomination on PC.
Without so much as a by-your-leave or offering to opt out you had the Creation Club files added to your hard drive.
It was all junk available for free on the Nexus and every time CC files are updated F4SE and other mods require updating to work.
And the prices in the Atom Store (FO76) are way overpriced.
And that last straw is TES VI and the space game will be crap from the start because with all the good engines to choose from Bethesda is sticking with what's easy, the Creation Engine.
It'll get new batteries for it's pacemaker and then it's "Once more unto the breach...".
I would love a TES VI with the dialog depth of a Witcher 3 or any number of old school RPGs.
And use a modern engine from their subsidiary id.
And produce a game that just works and isn't buggy as hell.
But, I have no faith Bethesda will get it close to right.

I honestly am new to internet forums. If i posted in the wrong section i do apologize. I also realize that my post was a little confusing to read. I am not the best at grammar and writing structure, especially when i had alot to say and didnt want to lose my thoughts. I will try to fix the post.
Just to prove it, as i was trying to comment on your post I ended up quoting you and creating a new post... *sigh*

Let me put this into very easy terms for you. Mabye you understand it better then.
Imagine you are a dog, I am your owner and trained you. Now I want you to jump though a hoop for me and to encourage you I am waving with a snack right behind the hoop. Since I know you very well I offer you the cheapest snack you like and save the other snacks if I want you to do more complicated things for me.
Now replace me with Bethesda and the hoop with buying/playing Fallout 76.
