  • The IGDA Puts Strict Legislation on Games

    https://www.dualshockers.com/cvaa-20...-disabilities/

I mean what? This list of things that games must now do is ridiculous. How do you make a visual medium playable without vision. Gaming is a visual medium of entertainment. I feel like at some of the people at the IGDA have never actually seen a video game before.

That's just about games with voice/text chat. It sounds way worse than it is. Pun intended.

Here's how the video game industry is handling the situation.

They went a little overboard with these rules. Probably didn't consider indie developers as well. It's easier to just not provide the text service to anyone at this point. I guess Nintendo's weird phone coms system isn't such a bad idea now (it's still bad).

Just for the text: Text to speech is part of Windows OS these days I think, so that should cover PC and Xbox. PS4 and Switch, I don't know. A lot harder would be making the other visual elements into audio or some other medium (haptic feedback?). I don't see how this can be done. It's complaint based though. How long do you think we'll have to wait for the first complaint to the FCC? How long do you think we'll have to wait for the first fine issued by the FCC?

Here's what the devs need to do to comply with the FCC etc etc. Very long video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GROVGdetG4

Apparently there is a blind person who played Abes Odyssey by listening to the sounds of footsteps and learning when to jump.

Can't they just put a disclaimer that the game isn't made for blind people?

                LMAO

In the picture on the article, they combined the wheelchair person with a game controller.

Also, this is ridiculous, but I don't want to get political.

That logo is ridiculous. I didn't notice it the first time I looked at the article.

How to force developers to waste more money on features only a smallest fraction of the users will ever need.

This will make, for new developpers, too expensive and complicated, helping big corporations at the cost of small startups.
NEVER use any Procter & Gamble product. Specially Gillette.

While accessibility is important and desirable it is not a great endeavor for all things, context is king. This is just going to reduce features and increase bloat in software. I'd rather see outside hardware or software be made freely available with publishers able to publish configs/plugins/whatever that can let 3rd party kit help read and input into games. I don't think things should be mandated in such a broad class of software, it's basically compelled speech if you are of the mindset that code = speech, which many people are.
