I don't know about this guy, wasn't he completely anti-Gamergate (the real consumer one, not the fake one the media tried to spin)? Then when Gamergate essentially won, he did a 180 and was suddenly down with it? I may be wrong but if that is true it's pretty self serving, though I do acknowledge people can realize they made a mistake as well.Originally posted by TR3NT View PostIan Miles Cheong (HypeBreak)
Jim Sterling is another one. He seems pretty solidly pro-consumer but can also be a bit of a dipstick. TheQuartering and me were having a bit of a todoment with him a few weeks ago on Twitter.
Some people called him an NPC, but I pointed out that no-one who could invent the Cornflakes Homunculus could be an NPC.
I almost soiled myself the first time I saw that, it's exactly my kind of stupid humour and the type of thing I would probably have done when I was a teenager.
This is probably starting to edge towards the political so I am going to shut up now.
Stolen From: https://youtu.be/jNLemHpDQ60 I binge watched some more of Jim's video and found the Cornflake Homunculus actually appeared earlier than the firs...

Correct - Ian did start out firmly anti-GG. I forget what started his redemption arc, but remember being quite surprised when he flipped.Originally posted by baboon View Post

Jim Sterling is definitely left-wing but he's the rare sort that values intellectual integrity. I disagree with him a lot (especially his gloomy takes on the nature of capitalism) but I feel that I could have a reasonable conversation with him.Originally posted by baboon View PostJim Sterling is another one. He goes down the rabbit hole of "greed is ruining everything" a bit and his on-camera persona is quite obnoxious. I'm not bothered by it but a lot of people take issue with either one of those and ignore him for it. At their own peril because he's a pretty decent sort and seems to side strongly with consumers all the time. Seems to stay away from most political stuff as well, only offering minor comments here and there or comparisons for comedic value.

Tech stuff and some gaming: Slashdot, Reddit, Ars Technica, EE Times, Hacker News
Tim Pool's two YouTube dailies are good for socio-political stuff (https://www.youtube.com/user/Timcasts) & (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCe0...ahAURWuxAJnjdA)

Like a lot of you, I stick to YouTube for my gaming news in particular... A lot of similar sources that others have mentioned, except I'll add YongYea to the list. I find him really informative and balanced, he does use some of the garbage "print" sites like Kotaku and Polygon as supporting sources to inform his commentary, but he's typically good at cutting through the bullshit and providing factual assessment, while also being very pro-consumer.
His hatred for loot boxes and willingness to shit on developers for releasing half-assed products makes him one of my favourites.

I'm very undecided about Joe Rogan, I think he's good but he does sometimes throw his guests under the bus. Either by asking someone like Sargon of Akkad from nowhere "do you believe 911 was a conspiracy" to dissing Gavin McInnes recently after they had a great time talking in person. I recently searched for Art Bell and Joe Rogan on YouTube and was delighted to see they actually did an interview on Art's show.
I appreciate that Art Bell was hardly a paragon of virtue in terms of some of the things he did in his life, but he never threw his guests under the bus, apart from the times he knew someone was BSing him and he cut the interview short. He'd never slag anyone off on air though.

Pew News is fun, and I find surprisingly informative.
For gaming, Gameranx is pretty good with their Friday videos with Jake Baldino, the video are usually purely about gaming and any opinions that he gives on more controversial gaming matter aren't forced and pretty apolitical, and is pretty welcoming to other opinions. If you like me, that's great! If you hate me, that's cool, just don't hide it.

Not going to go into detail with most of them but these are some that I follow
Sidalpha, Jim Sterling, The Know, Appabend, Pew News, Nintendo Life, Steam(found out their blog has an RSS feed), and Get Indie Gaming.Chickens are quite possibly the most vicious creatures I have encountered.

I mainly go to YouTube, but I have a few websites I visit from time to time. A mix of content from different sources (even some of the more.. fanboyish sources) helps to get a fuller picture of what's going on.
YouTube: American Krogan, appabend, Downward Thrust, DreamcastGuy, gameranx, GameXplain (mainly for Nintendo stuff), Geeks + Gamers, GoNintendo, Griffin Gaming, Hardware Unboxed, HYDEgaming (fighting game footage) Hype Break, It'sAGundam, Jim Sterling (can get a bit much at times), MMOByte, NintendoEverything NihongoGamer, Nintendo Prime (interesting discussions even if I don't always agree), PlayerEssence (can be a bit fanboyish at times), Raging Golden Eagle, ReviewTechUSA, Rhykker, TheQuartering / Unsleeved Media, YellowFlash, and YongYea - plus some others but may not be purely gaming related or are specific to one particular game.
I also used to go to a lot of places that had PlayStation and Xbox related content, but seeing as I only use PC and switch these days to adapt to my lifestyle, I don't really go to those channels anymore.
Websites: Nichegamer, The Gaming Ground, OneAngryGamer, OP Rainfall, Nintendo Life (quite biased, but good for collecting the general gist of Nintendo related news). Hopefully Exclusively Games is added to the mix. I may also check out some of the suggestions here too.

Specifically gaming news I get from trusted youtubers like ReviewTechUSA, YongYea, PewdiePie and of course the Quatering as well as others like Jim Sterling etc.
I do not read mainstream critic reviews, jouralist reviews or anything of the sort though, I simply do not trust them to be honest or unbiased and they almost always come across as shilling for a game or company for personal or political reasons.
I occasionally read player reviews on steam but the main bulk of my interest in a game is determined by gameplay footage/gameplay trailers and partly by review opinions of some trusted youtubers after they've got their hands on a game.
I almost never pre-order or pick up games within their first month on the market to avoid the disappointment in wasting money on a game that's been overhyped or misrepresented.
Too many games oversell themselves these days.. sometimes by promoting visuals the finished product does not have, sometimes by sneaking in really scummy microtransaction/lootbox systems, sometimes by the developers just outright lying about features that won't be in the final game or never existed in the first place and sometimes by the game being so broken at launch it's still not worth the price point 12 months later.
There's just so much mistrust in this industry now that I cannot help but play the skeptic and opt to wait and see what comes out about these games after they launch.
That way I can assign my own value to a game based on what I feel the game is worth paying for.. or just outright dismissing the game entirely and refusing to play and support it.Last edited by Teratus; 12-10-2018, 01:35 PM.Don't ask me why, I probably forgot.

I miss the days when Giant Bomb didn't go into political pandering on every episode.Originally posted by Teran View PostI prefer https://www.nichegamer.com lately. They are a small operation but present themselves well on twitter and I like the content... but as the name implies, they can be a bit niche compared to the bigger operations.
Giant Bomb is still ok, mostly.
