Final Fantasy X and Elder Scrolls Oblivion are two games that I hold in really high regard. Final Fantasy X (my favorite game of all time) really got me into JRPG genre where I was looking for other JRPG games to play. Story was great, characters were fun, and Spira was a really cool world to explore. When I played Oblivion for the first time and got out of the jail at the beginning, I was amazed that I can do whatever and ideally however I wanted. I spent hundreds of hours doing the guild quests, random side quests, and taking the obnoxious arena fan to the highest point to do awesome kills that would knock him off the mountain.

Blue Dragon. Has an overworld. A class system I like though I would have preferred each character having their own abilities. The best battle camera I've ever seen in an rpg, A story that had genuine surprises. That classic toriyama character design. On the downside the character are kind of annoying, especially marumaru.

I loved blue dragon! I was dissapointed however how short the game was and there wasnt a replay value. Its been a while but i believe there wasnt much reason to grind at all in the game. I dont mean endless hrs of mindless grinding, but giving the gamers something to work for to get the best weapons or skills or whatever.
Everything else in the game was amazing.

If we were just talking about the world itself, I'd say Final Fantasy 12. Ivalice is my favorite video game world of all time. Other than that, it's hard to pick out one that stands above the rest. I love the Etrian Odyssey games, the dragon quest games, most of the final fantasy games. So Im having a hard time narrowing it down to just one game.

Oreshika: Tainted bloodlines, this was a blast until i lost my vita ;_;
Dragon age 2 (yes): i know that fans of the first one really didn't like the 2nd, BUT i liked the aesthetics and the combat soO much, and the main character.. and even the gaymage .
I'd even say that i liked 2nd one more than the Inquisition !
(okay, i want to play it again now, dammit!)First Generation 1:1 "And they did make the console, and said "Let there be games" and it was good"

I'd argue that Tales of Vesperia was the best of the tales games to come out post 2000, shame it was a 360 exclusive for western audiences, good news is we're getting a remaster early next year that I personally can't wait for.
As for the question itself? That's really hard to answer.
Best JRPG: Persona 5 or Lost Odyssey (Honourable mentions to the Trails and Xenoblade series)
Best Western: Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines or Dragon Age Origins
RPG's are my favourite games, so it's really difficult to choose.

I can barely choose one so heres a list:
Borderlands 2 and the pre-sequel
both Kotors (still sad there will be no Kotor 3)
of course elder scolls oblivion and skyrim (haven't played morrowind, might try it).
Red dead redemption 1 (I would have 2 but haven't played it yet) and finally
The witcher 3 (might go buy 1 and 2 eventually)
Edit cause I can't type well.

I'd say TES IV: Oblivion. It was my first game into the TES series so maybe I'm a bit biased but that's just how it is. Tried Morrowind before that but unfortunately it was too outdated for me to get into. SWKoTOR is amazing as well. I hated it at first because the gameplay mechanics felt clunky and too boring. Tried again after a year or two and fell in love with the game.

Skies of Arcadia
Tons of honorable mentions though:
Dragon Quest VIII, Mother 3, Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, Suikoden V, Persona 3, Shadow Hearts, Tales of Symphonia, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, Suikoden III, Shadow Hearts Covenant, Baten Kaitos Origins, and much more.
However, I tend to like 90s RPGs more.Last edited by Bright Shield; 12-16-2018, 04:13 AM.

I have a really hard time choosing THE favorite in anything. For my tastes, the late 90s and early 2000s were the golden age for RPGs, a magical time where technology was becoming sufficiently advanced for an enjoyable experience but "streamlining" hadn't yet gone too far. I wouldn't know how to choose between games like Gothic 1/2, Morrowind, Wizardry 8, Deus Ex, BG 2 or Arcanum, their all great in their own way.
Games such as Kotor 1/2, Mass effect trilogy, DA: Origins, New Vegas, NW2, Geneforge, PoE, Mount & blade, Divinity, Age of Decadence, and many others are also up there for me. I know, I kinda missed the point the thread, but nothing really stands heads and shoulders above the others for me to pick a specific favorite.

Phew that's a pretty wide window, but in recent memory I'd say I really enjoyed Persona 5 and when I played it I felt like I hadn't played a jRPG that good in years. Radiant Historia was pretty good. Black Sigil looks good and I want to play it. On the Western side probably Borderlands 2. Stretching back to the early 2000s... Vagrant Story, KOTOR, Breath of Fire 4, Baldur's Gate 2.Like missteps at wit and occasional intelligence? Follow me on Twitter

Most of my favorite RPGs are from early-mid 2000s, it was a ripe age for them. Planescape is technically from December 99 but I learned about it way, way later so I think it needs to be mentioned, same for re-releases of the original Fallouts. Arcanum, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Bard's tale, Diablo, TES, Gothic, KOTOR, Deus ex, Vampire the masquerade, Neverwinter nights - all absolute classics. Then it all kinda slowed down, but still many big and more action oriented RPGs came out - Fable, Borderlands, Mass effect, Dragon age, Dark/ souls, Dark messiah, TWEWY, Witcher. Even Java phones had some gems like Heroes lore. As for smaller titles Age of decadence impressed me with its highly non-linear story, and then there's the whole scene of small quirky indie RPGs that are all very iconic if not exactly mainstream, OFF and Undertale still have a huge following for example. Regrettably I'm not well versed in console exclusive RPGs as they have been historically dead in my country(I only played TWEWY and FFs on my smartphone for example).
