The closest thing I played to an RPG/JRPG growing up was the Legend of Zelda series. A friend down the street wanted to trade his PSX for my N64 w/ OoT. I was probably 13 or so back then.
That PlayStation included a copy of (memory might be failing me) PlayStation magazine demo disc that had a demo of FFVII, trailer to FFT & a demo for Cool Borders 3.
Holy shit, that trailer to FFT blew my fucking mind. The music, the atmosphere & the designs looked incredible! Playing the demo for FFVII was amazing as well. By the time I was finished, I was on the hunt for either game and found FFVII, oddly enough, at our local pawn shop. $10 later I was kicking ass all through Midgar.
VII introduced me to the FF series & Squaresoft in general. Eventually, I made my way into the remaining FF’s on the PS1 and the all time greatest JRPG ever, Xenogears. I also tackled Breath of Fire 3, attempted (and failed) SaGa Frontier, Legend of Legia, Wild Arms 3, Secret of Mana & Chrono Trigger (bundled with FFIV).
The PlayStation was probably the best console for JRPG’s back in the day. IMO.

Who remembers great JPRG's from the 80's and 90's? (maybe some 00's to)

I started back around '84-85 with some Rouge game using ASCII-art on an Apple II that my high school science teacher would let the kids with the good grades play during lunch hour.
FF1 on my friends NES.
I ended up buying a sega when I saved enough money from work. So I played a lot of Phantasy Star games, and I really enjoyed a few of the Shining Force games as well. Kinda fell out of games for several years because I moved around a lot and never really had time.
Think the last game I really got into on a console was Legend of Dragoon on the playstation. Another fun title. A 1999 game, but technically it didn't reach the United States until around 2001. Border-line qualifies.Last edited by Forge; 12-05-2018, 04:04 AM.

Ahh the .hack series! I remember being stunned by being able to put in random keywords and combine them to make up a whole new generated world! In the era it came out that was completely new to me and very exciting.

Oh man, I remember playing .hack//Infection and being really into it but I was never able to find any of the sequels.Originally posted by DEVIL JACKAL View PostJrpgs are life. I honestly wish for a remake of the original dot hack games for ps2 every year around Christmas time.

JRPG's from the early 90's are what turned me into a gamer and began my love of video game music. Specifically FF2(america) and Chrono Trigger.
Also, Nobuo Uematsu and Yasunori Mitsuda are incredible composers. Their music brought stories to life and it still makes me emotional when I listen to them.

My first turn based RPG ever was Final Fantasy 1 for NES. I remember we bought a used NES from a kid and most of his collection so he could upgrade or something. I was always a console generation behind and only had an Atari 2600 before that. I was so young and dumb I thought the thief class in the game could steal from the shops. Loved the game though and have played as many RPGs as I could over the years and even now am playing through the Dragon Warrior/Quest games since I managed to miss out on all but the first one growing up. Currently on the fourth title, can't wait to catch up.

Can't forget Saga Frontier. Obviously 1 was dope but, always wondered who kept up with the trilogy after likely getting rekt by 1 on their first time playing.

Yeah, i still replay a lot of those. FF and Suikoden are some of my favorite series. Legend of Dragoon is probably my favorite game of all time
That said... There are still great JRPGs like that being made, though obviously they dont have the extra nostalgia points

I've logged countless hours in games such as Breath of Fire 1 (which is still my favorite game), Breath of Fire 2, Phantasy Star 4, and Chrono Trigger. I didn't get into Final Fantasy until I was a little older, but it's definitely one of my favorite series. I sincerely hope we'll see a Final Fantasy XVI, and soon, but my favorite is IX, on the PS1. I felt like it was a nice return to the traditional fantasy setting of Final Fantasy after the departures of VII and VIII.

Gray pretty much hit most of mine, definitely have to add Chrono Trigger and Ogre Battle to those. Also, don't remember the year but Skies of Arcadia on Dreamcast was the straight dope.
