As long as you make it clear what clan traits you are using to your opponent, I can't imagine it would be a problem.

For actual lore http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/T...0,000_Universe heres a decent enough starting point for current canon. From there onward yer on yer own yah grot. Gork and Mork keep you my son

I would suggest checking out a youtube channel called Luetin09. Dude has hours of videos on lore.
Also tabletop wise, 40K has some smaller scale games to play. Kill team for example, I haven't played it but it looks cool as hell and you don't need to dump hundreds to thousands of dollarydoos on building an army.

For lore you'd probably be better off checking out on of the 40k wikis. As for games there's obviously the tabeltop game but if you mean video games go for Dawn of War or Space Marine.

I'm looking for a combination of fun to paint/creativity in designing my army. Also fun playing the game ie not getting dominated every match.

    So far I'm undecided between:

Blood angels - Seem competitive and I like the lore/design

Grey knights - Small army size seems good for a new player on a budget

Space Wolves - Fucking love the lore and visuals

Tyranids - Looks like absolute blast to paint.

I also love the look of the Death Guard but I like fast and mobile gameplay, and from what I heard DG are super slow and sluggish.

Tell me what to do. I'm more indecisive than your girlfriend turning down what restaurant you suggest.

I used to play 40k (Blood Angels) and Fantasy (Orcs) many years ago, just got back into the hobby recently but haven't played any games yet, been busy collecting and painting (I won't play unpainted, and I like to paint every model well so this could take some time...)

Over the years I've seen the main game rules change almost month-by-month at times, a few times I decided to invest in rule books etc and really try to get into it I just found that by the time I was almost ready then the rules had gone through a couple of major iterations already so my rule books and figures were out of date. Nowadays I only tend to invest in the boxed game sets, there are many to choose from and most have some sort of cross-over with one another or the main games so they seem like a much safer investment as if nothing else they can be played independently of main game rule changes, plus I like the lack of any grey areas in the rules - they are what they are, often simplified and on confined board sections with less room for ambiguity.

From my own experience there will always be someone who will make it their mission to exploit any grey areas or unrealistic tactics they can in order to win, these kind of people ruin the fun IMO and don't play in the spirit or lore of the game, if you come across one such individual (e.g. they play Chaos in a 500 point game, then suddenly produce a 500 point character model from nowhere "because it's chaos") then I suggest you immediately declare a tactical retreat (which would be more realistic than just sitting there being slaughtered) and call it a draw, let them have the hollow victory if they insist but just stop play and make a point of never playing them again. Move onto the next player / game, paint more models, go back to enjoying the hobby.

Recently I've been working on painting up Shadespire NightVault figures (Age of Sigmar / Fantasy, but definitely self-contained) and will then move onto Blackstone Fortress and Forgebane (this plays to 40k rules in a skirmish campaign setting, a good starting point), Kill Team is also a very good way to get into 40k, there are several core sets available depending on what armies you want to try out (you get two opposing armies in the box, plus some excellent plastic scenery, not just the cardboard stuff one used to get).

As someone who doesn't have any friends who play these kind of games, any single player options are a boon so Blackstone Fortress is ideal, there are a few non-GW board games that also have single player options so I will be looking into those too at some point (Fallout, for example, which also tickles my previous love for Fallout 3/4 on PS4).

So, I would highly recommend looking at the boxed game sets, whether it's something like Forgebane (there are others of similar style featuring different armies) or Kill Team, you'll get a load of figures to go at and experience painting, plus a gentle introduction to the main 40k game.

Personally I like the look and lore of the Skitarii (as featured in Forgebane), plus always liked the look of the Necrons as Terminator-ish! I got the Kill Team core set which has Skitarii vs Gene Stealer Cultists so they should be fun to paint too.

Probably the most fun I had painting recently was a few Chaos Plague Marines from the Conquest GW magazine - so many disgusting organic bits, goo, plague, and basing options! Conquest is a good way to try out just a few figures cheaply, the easy-build plastic figures have the same fine detail as the boxed set figures but not the posing options (unless you're very skilled with a saw and knife).

Good luck, let us see what you create!

Got into 40k over the summer, and I've dropped a few thousand on it already. Irresponsible? Yes. Something I regret? Absolutely not. Right now I have a Space Wolf force of 400 mixed infantry strong, 3 Stormwolves, 2 Stormfangs, 3 Land Raider Crusaders, 2 Vindicators, every named Space Wolf character (including Bjorn Fellhanded and Murderfang), 2 Redemptor Dreadnoughts, 1 Venerable Dreadnought, and a few Imperial Knights (Canis Rex ftw) and I treat each one as practice for painting so it'll be a while yet before I get them all completed.

I also have a mix of Genestealers, Deathguard, Gellerpox, Elucidian Starstriders , and two random squats I picked up on eBay on the cheap.

I've taken to the hobby really quickly, play my first match next month and I hope I've done enough studying to table the right force for the job.

In the meantime, here is my latest Space Wolf (I know the blue is closer to Night Lords, but I got a bit bored with the light gray/blue).
