I'm looking for a combination of fun to paint/creativity in designing my army. Also fun playing the game ie not getting dominated every match.

    So far I'm undecided between:

Blood angels - Seem competitive and I like the lore/design

Grey knights - Small army size seems good for a new player on a budget

Space Wolves - Fucking love the lore and visuals

Tyranids - Looks like absolute blast to paint.

I also love the look of the Death Guard but I like fast and mobile gameplay, and from what I heard DG are super slow and sluggish.

Tell me what to do. I'm more indecisive than your girlfriend turning down what restaurant you suggest.
I've Been playing 8th edition for over a year now, its a tonne of fun and they did a pretty bang up job with it IMHO. I have experience with most of the armies you listed so I'll give my thoughts

Blood Angels - Great army, the +1 to wound on the charge is massive and they have a lot of depth to fall back on as a gunline as well so you can mix it up pretty well. The Changes to deep strike hurt them a bit but you can do a mixed Imperial guard (Astra Militarum) force with a BA strike force if you want to be really competitive.

Grey Knights - Pretty minis, I'd love to paint an army of them up, but they aren't common because they're expensive for what you get

Space Wolves - haven't experienced the new codex on the table top but I hear its pretty good, BA will likely be more "competitive" from what I've heard but the wolves do have awesome lore and the minis look gorgeous I don't think you'd be disappointed

'nids - very competitive, lots of options and they'd be fun to paint

Death Guard - Near and dear to my heart, my fav army and one i have the most experience with, yes the main elements are slow but you can speed em up or use speedy elements. The bloat drones for example move 10 and with a few combos you can advance them quickly. I love using them to throw at my opponent because they're hard to kill with their 5+ deamon save and Disgustingly resilient and they do work both in CC and with the Plague Spewer. I back them up with a rhino which moves 12 (chaos rhino's FTW) and acts as a Car bomb when you toss it into the lines of the enemy and force it to cook off when they destroy it doing D3 Mortal wounds to everyone within 6 inches (its a DG strategem) you can also include a deamon prince with wings if you want mobility and hell a plague burst crawler with two plague spewers moves 9 inches and is hard as hell to kill. Hit your enemy with enough hard to kill fast stuff while your Plague horde shambles across the board and overwhelms him by turn 3 or 4.

As you can tell I have a lot to say about DG but I think you'll be happy with any of your choices (except Grey Knights? )

    Cheers

Yeah it's quite expensive. I get most of my stuff through ebay which most of the times tend to end up being cheaper.

You can paint your models however you want, then just play them with Goff rules. You just make sure before a game that you plan on playing with their set of rules. Most people wouldnt care for that. It's always nice to see people's take on armies.

Yeah he beat the living crap out of Logar. Logar had to flee back through the portal Corvus came through and try to run. Corvus devastated the Word Bearers home world and killed many of them. He is still wildly seeking revenge for the drop-site massacre. His powers of hiding and striking from the shadows in the warp have become incredibly stronger to the point of which looking right at him you can no longer see him.

Also Hello everyone, I am a raven guard player with forge world raven guard. I have around 4000 points of the stuff and other silliness. They are my favorite and sometimes I even play them as alpha legion. Those that know the story will understand that. I also have new death guard, because they make nurgle look pretty, and Dark eldar. Been playing since 4th when I was quite young.

When it comes to what to buy, what I would go for is just pick the one you like the most. The lore and look at first and then just jump into it. Its a load of fun.

There were rumors of a short story where Corvus Corax is stalking Lorgar inside the warp. Has anyone read this? It was available at some Games Workshop convention earlier this year.

Dude I love the 40k Lore. I started reading the Horus Heresy Books 2 years ago and since then I haven't read a page of manga or comics. I like watching streams on twitch of people painting figures.

I've been a fan of 40k since I was probably around 13-14 years old. It was only the books back then because I had seen how expensive the models can be, and as a kid that kinda threw me off of it. Since then, I have been getting more and more into boardgaming (in addition to my always present video game addiction) and a buddy at work suggested that I start with a little army first. 40K's 8th edition had just released and i got a Start Collecting set of Deathwatch and the Kill Team Cassius box. Now, I have about 3000 points of Inquisition forces (mostly Deathwatch) that I need to finish painting... lol!!

As an army, Deathwatch is supposed to be a flexible, anti-alien force built through tithed members of other Space Marine chapters. If you REALLY want to, you can start buying Chapter specific units and use them as member of the Deathwatch. that added bits of fluffy visuals would look really cool on a table. The main thing that Deathwatch get over other SM armies are Mixed Units and Special Issue Ammunition rules. The Mixed Units allows your basic Veterans and Intercessors units to also include more specialized and elite units that each buff the whole unit in a specific way. The special issue ammo lets you change all the bolt weapons to have various bonuses against enemies depending on the situation you find yourself in. I think that both the Fluff for who the Deatchwatch are and the in-game rules set them apart, thematically, from any other army in the game and and they are pretty fun too. maybe check out some videos of games with Deathwatch in them! plus, painting wise, you can basically have marines from EVERY SM chapter, so you can paint anything you want!

Good. Good. More armies to enter the fray and wreck havoc amongst the uncaring stars. As others have mentioned your choice of army really depends more on what you're going to do with it. If you just wanna paint and play with cool things then by all means do whatever you want. If you want to compete in games then you will need to look at what is competitive but its a rabbit hole you are going down there. Based on what you have outlined:

Blood angels - They are competitive and they are quite aggressive in play. Sanguinary Guard and Dante and certainly full of rip and tear. Get up close and start mauling away and watch gunlines disappear.

Grey knights - Small size, quite nerfed from their glory days. Extremely expensive models in points which means you're going to hurt for every unit lost. (Custodians are possibly an option in this category as they have teleportation and jetbikes making them fast and just look plain cool and have all new models).

Space Wolves - Their new codex makes them a story to play. They have a lot of also up close and killing style abilities. Like lone wolf that turns the last unit in a squad into a semi character enhancing their killing abilities.

Tyranids - I imagine they would be fun to paint. They are a bugger to transport with all their spindly bits. Also melee isn't what it was anymore. Other people might argue different but every time I see blobs of genestealers I look forward to my shooting. Also moving 20+ gaunts across the table is time consuming.

Death Guard - Slowly march up the board and will exterminate all before them. They take a licking and keep on coming with their saving throws. Been rolled over by a Death Guard player many a time.

@OP Competitive where? Tournaments or friendly matches?

I'd say pick your army based on what looks appealing to you (looks-wise). All armies are viable in friendly games, but the balance is going to shift a bit with the 2018 Chapter Approved.

I did maintain a 4000+pt Tau Army before going back to Uni. Was my absolute pride and joy! The majority of the army was bulked out by large suits like the Riptides and Broads (including warforge XV suits) and plenty of hammerheads. Only needed 4 squads of infantry with a Fireblade, an elder and one of the commanders and job done. Now I'm trying to rebuild another army but focusing on the Adeptus Mechanicus. But they will never replace the memories of my glorious Tau
