I've been a fan of 40K since childhood, collecting random models and painting them. Recently, I decided to start actually playing and am super conflicted with what army to choose.
I'm looking for a combination of fun to paint/creativity in designing my army. Also fun playing the game ie not getting dominated every match.
So far I'm undecided between:
Blood angels - Seem competitive and I like the lore/design
Grey knights - Small army size seems good for a new player on a budget
Space Wolves - Fucking love the lore and visuals
Tyranids - Looks like absolute blast to paint.
I also love the look of the Death Guard but I like fast and mobile gameplay, and from what I heard DG are super slow and sluggish.
Tell me what to do. I'm more indecisive than your girlfriend turning down what restaurant you suggest.

I never really got into tabletop playing 40k. There were simply never people around me who did it (at least to my knowledge).
Oh well, maybe that will change at some point. I move around often

I used to have a ~3000 point Dark Angels army... and a small Grey Knights army (because I loved the look of the models and wanted to paint them). I was so proud of my Dark Angels leader though... I ran a librarian and dumped like 300 points into him and he was basically a leader killer with his force weapon... but I customized the model. I took Cypher's model and replaced his bolt pistol arm with one of the force halberds from the standard grey knight infantry... the pieces fit together perfectly and the grey knights even had a spot on their shoulder pad for text so I got to display the name of my leader.
I miss my army but I gave it to a friend when I fell out of 40K because they ruined everything in 5th edition+ (for the dark angels at least, in my opinion hehe).

TBH i went with rule of cool and lore to decide my army. I have Blood Angles, Tau, Admec, and some guard. Go with what you like but if you're competitive go with with the Nids or death guard

Infinity looks really fun, and the minis look high-quality. I might end up getting some once I finish my army up in the next few months.

Guy named 40k Theories has a channel that has a few playlists under "40K Lore for Newcomers" that I would recommend. His videos are usually short and to the point... if you want a much deeper dive, Arch Warhammer is brilliant, but longer-form.

Have you heard of a squad based scifi miniature game called Infinity?Originally posted by Methpoodle View PostCheers for the info dude. They look fun as hell to paint. I've seen some awesomely painted nid armies.
If you like painting minis, this could be a good game for you because they have beautiful minis.

Dats cuz youz tau boyz don't gotz proppa orky valuez. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sg9eR66uLOgOriginally posted by FuriousBanter View PostI like the Tau a lot cause they have a lot of interesting models, though their lore is a little sparse imo. Inperium and eldar have the most fleshed out lore, space Marines are good as starter models for playing, and eldar are very flexible if a bit squishy.

I used to collect and paint them, but became too expensive, so I stick with the books, such a great amount of lore in the 40k universe.

primaris marines are awesome id suggest them. I absolutely love 40k started playing near the end of 4th edition. I dont play table top much any more just cause its easier to set up and play a board game. I keep on the books and games and can lose hours browsing the lexicanum wiki
