  • DUSK - Easily The Best Indie FPS Game of 2018

Dusk is a classic style FPS shooter that captures the feel of top tier old-school shooters with such perfection you'll swear it came out in the late 90's. It's been so long since I've played an FPS this high quality and it is so awesome. It's easy to tell that the developers of Dusk were big fans of classic FPS games like Doom, Quake, Duke3D and others.

The gameplay is so perfect and smooth it flows like liquid silk on buttered ice. Blasting the enemies while you strafe past their attacks has never been so satisfying, at least not for a long time. I found the FOV started slightly too high giving the game a strange distorted fish-eye look while really took away from the game but once I lowered it to 100 things looked great and felt perfect.

The art style / graphics in this game make me think of Quake crossed with Unreal and Doom and work well together. It's obviously an older graphics style but it's done well and when playing it fits perfectly, this whole game feels very much like it was created in the late 90's. The audio is also something special in this game the amazing music is like some sort of awesome Doom2016-inspired metal and the score reminds me of John Carpenter movies, it's exceptionally well done and also the ambiance and sound effects throughout the levels. You'll want to wear a nice set of headphones with this game and have it up nice and loud.

There are 5 difficulty levels as well as an option to start each level with no weapons, forcing you to only use what you can grab on each level. There's an endless mode as well as online multiplayer. The online multiplayer is probably the least impressive feature of this game although it is okay. I found a bit a lag on the servers and while I like the level design I found them a tiny bit small for the number of players on each map. That said, it's still a decent multiplayer but the single player is where this game shines the brightest.

The map design is exceptional, at first the levels are open and straight forward but as you go on and especially in the 2nd episode the level design becomes far more complex and often times I was just sitting here marvelling at the levels themselves. Having lots of experience making levels for many classic FPS games I was just blown away by how incredibly well done and smart the map designs were.

There really isn't much to complain about with Dusk, I saw a couple graphical glitches but nothing of any significance. Perhaps a map would be nice although I only got lost once, the levels are well designed but totally new players to FPS games may have a bit more trouble. Also the FOV, I think if there was a slider and the player could choose how they want it sort of like how adjusting brightness works,it might be better because the default FOV makes the game look distorted and some players may not know about it.

This is a definite must-buy for any old school FPS fan and I would also recommend it to fans of more recent FPS games who are looking for more intense action. I haven't had this much fun playing a game in years, it was like I had somehow teleported back in time to when so many amazing FPS games were coming out and I was playing the best new "doom killer", those were good times. This game is good times.

You beat me to it! I'm currently on E2M5, and I didn't want to post a review until I finish the game. Did you get Hellraiser vibes from the early levels of E2?

So so many vibes. It felt like so many amazing FPS games all in one with the look of Quake crossed with DOOM and Unreal but yeah it also felt like some awesome movies from the 90's too. The Serious Sam style music during intense action scenes is amazing, this game truly blew me away. I'm constantly sitting here with my jaw wide open, so impressive.

It really is something special. I'm going to take my time savoring this game, then I will put together a review. Aside from a few glitches, it is a near flawless experience.

Game of the year for me! Gameplay is super fluid and the levels are amazing. Every weapon has its purpose making playing it a beautiful dance of death hopping around and choosing the right weapon for the right situation. Soundtrack is badass and some levels do horror better than most horror games.

I couldn't agree more. To capture the essence of what made shooters really good that well is a true achievement. I can't wait for Amid Evil to come out now.

I don't know about you guys but I love this resurgence of retro-shooters. Back during the height of the banal military FPS craze of the early aughties I thought I'd have to give up on my favorite genre of games. Dusk is fast and crazy enough to remind one of the carefree days of shooting while having enough heart and personality to still make it's own mark next to games like Sin and Blood 2.

Gotta disagree. I downloaded the game, played for about an hour and a half and then refunded it. It didn't capture the essence of the classics for me for some reason..

This looks very interesting. I just finished playing Quake (properly for the first time, disgracefully) a few weeks ago, so this is of interest to me right now. Good review.

Putting your verdict in the title makes the rest irrelevant.

That's cool, some people just want a quick read and that title sums it all nicely

I guess I'll be the first one to suggest Rainbow Six Siege, super fun once you get into it, although it takes a bit to learn the basics. (I would recommend playing with friends.) I always liked COD because I'm pretty alright at FPS games and I just like to run around and shoot.

Regarding physics I doubt that liquid silk would flow smooth on buttered ice :P

But yea, DUSK is great! And AMID EVIL too!
