  • Scummy Publisher Tactics Review - Merging/Closing/Opening servers

(I'd just like to write based on past experience on the inner workings of game publishers. Instead of reviewing a game, I'll review what practices they did to get more cash out of customers.)

Publishers that merge, close and then open new servers do it to target players who like to spend early in a server's lifespan to get ahead. This might not happen very often, but it is something that players need to be aware of, especially for online games such as MMOs.

There is a section of players who might like the game enough that they enjoy starting out in a fresh server. They pay for all the cash shop items as this is often done for F2P/MTX games. Once population is low, usually after a long time of servers operating, a publisher might announce a server merge. This compresses players from two or more servers into one to boost ailing populations. They will then try to hype up the game to open a new server, even when they really have no real long-term plans or content for the game.

They will get people to come back to try the new server by maybe adding some slight changes, but no real fixes for long-term issues that made players quit in the first place. This is all to recycle whales and minnows into paying for all the stuff to level up all over again which includes boosters, bag space and so forth. These types of players will want to be at the top and get ahead, but whatever issue that caused them to quit in the first place is probably still unresolved.

People with nostalgic attachments to certain games fall for this and some publishers have recycled the same crowd two or more times by repeatedly merging and opening new servers without any real meaningful content or improvements to service. It's just another type of hamster wheel that they put players through and it's done purely for profit.

This often happens to dead-end games or games with looming content droughts in the hopes of getting more money out of existing customers. There is often no real intent to provide an improved experience when they do this. Unless you really enjoy that game, it would be good to be wary of such practices as it is the industry equivalent of making customer cash and time circle slowly down the drain.

    TL;DR

Some publishers may utilize nostalgia and some false hype to get players to jump from server to server. This is done through merging and closing old ones and opening new ones with minimal or superficial benefits/improvements so they can monetize the rush to max level over and over again without having to release meaningful content.
