"Bringing more casual people into games" is something I appreciate. I love when a player base can bring anybody in. However, this new Pokemon series failed to be a good introductory game. Why do I feel like it was supposed to be played by people who are blind and heavily disabled?
It's supposed to bring GO players into playing official games, so Let's Go is supposed to be more in tune with GO features.
'Don't worry though, we'll be back to core mechanics in the next installment!'
I however, don't feel very comfortable trusting that. Let's GO over some of the mechanics that have been introduced.
Throw a berry, throw a ball in the right time, and MAYBE you'll get the Pokemon. Sometimes it runs before you can do anything, sometimes it'll repeatedly break out over and over no matter what you use. Legendaries can just destroy berries, which isn't even in GO. Snorlax can just screw off and leave the catching part of the battle to go back to the mountains, which really upset me until I found that you can just go ahead and catch Snorlax in the wild when you beat the game. Guess Snorlax isn't that cool and unique anymore. I personally feel like the new catch system has removed the challenge of actually trying to catch the Pokemon. It's ALL about catching them all now; they've even reduced the price of Balls all over. I mean, it makes sense to do that considering how many balls you'll waste just trying to catch Exeggcute.
You know I didn't encounter a 6 Pokemon team until fighting the Champion, but had a full team before encountering Brock? Just about every trainer I fought had 1-2 Pokemon, maybe 3 or 4, and they all fell to me in a few turns or less. There was absolutely no effort whatsoever until I had to fight Green after catching Mewtwo, which was at the very end of the game. Even the Gym Leaders were a lot weaker this time around.
I walked through the entirety of Rock Tunnel without ever using Flash. It was actually pretty bright in there. That just speaks for itself.
Don't have enough money to buy potions and revives for the Elite 4? That's ok! With the PC box now existing in your bag, you can just switch out your Pokemon in your team for others and ensure fully healed Pokemon every time! You could even have a constructed team for each individual Elite 4 member.
How about God Caterpie? So I was chaining together Caterpies for shinies (a process that I actually appreciate a lot), when I noticed all these candies I was getting that were the same as in GO. Lo and behold, these upped Caterpie's stats by 1 each. You can max this for 200 candies into each Pokemon, and here I was using a lvl 40 something Caterpie fighting the Elite 4. I was taking Outrage to the face from Dragonite with no issue, and using TACKLE to smash Dragonite into oblivion. By the time I had finished using candies on my Caterpie at lvl 7 and was stomping lvl 20's I was getting very annoyed by the simplicity of this game.
Also can we take a moment to appreciate the incredible volume of Plot Excaliburs the Eevee/Pikachu has?
" I've got this unique move I've honed over a long time. that can let me HM. Here, wanna learn? Oh, your Eevee seems eager to learn it, but it's a Pokemon. This was more meant for humans, GuEsS wE'lL tEaCh It AnYwAyS iN jUsT a FeW sEcOnDs."
"Wow, your Pokemon must be pretty sPeCiAl to learn that!"
That was some awful garbage, right there. You're telling me somebody was willing to let some dumb little Eevee or Pikachu to drive a pretty dangerous flotation device? You're telling me an Eevee or Pikachu can accurately control a surfboard that also has a 10 year old who sure as heck didn't learn to ride the surfboard who's also accurately riding it? It's like they didn't even try to make a reasonable story, instead opting to shove in as many 'endearing' or 'emotional' moments as possible with the buddy Pokemon. The worst part was when I stopped using Eevee around lvl 23 because I learned it can have moves of every type. Like, that's so insanely unnecessary, and to top the buddy thing off, the game continued to act like Eevee was fighting along side me in this epic journey when the little bugger sat in my PC. It even made this obvious whenever I tried to use an HM and be forced to sit through yet another useless animation by my Eevee, and half of the time it was upset or jealous and wanted to battle. No Eevee, I'm trying to make the game feel like I'm not getting held by Nintendo's hand through each and every action I perform. The real icing on this OP cake was when a Rocket member threw a card key into the rafters to prevent me from getting to his boss, then TOLD ME I COULD GET IT WITH A NIMBLE POKEMON LIKE MY EEVEE.
I have so many more issues with this game but I gotta pause or my brain is gonna implode.
My problem is that I've played Pokemon since I was in 2nd grade. I had no problems with the game, and it felt like a fun challenge. You can't tell me that it was meant for beginners or kids because it's ALWAYS been that way. For 20 years Pokemon has evolved their mechanics and stuck with what works while introducing new ones and it has all been great. There was no reason for them to massively switch up the formula until Pokemon GO blew up, and let's be real, Pokemon GO is not a Pokemon game. It may look and feel like a Pokemon game, but it's more like a side game, along the same vein as Mystery Dungeon or Pokemon Ranger. It's.. It's the Safari Zone, all in one game. But if this is supposed to be an introductory series, supposed to bring new people in from GO, then what are you gonna do when the next core games come out? Just gonna throw away all the mechanics you brought in? That would be pretty jarring and definitely will make a lot of people who are used to playing that way leery, or it might not. Ya never know, but the problem is how dumbed down and different this game is from others. Even Gale of Darkness and Colosseum, which had you catching other trainer's Pokemon and having almost no wild Pokemon while also making everything a double battle, STILL feels more like a solid Pokemon game than Let's GO. I bought this game for my little brother and he called me up asking why it was so easy. Clearly kids aren't getting dumber, so why was this game so skewed?
