Dark Souls T n' E?
Would you agree with the assertion that the Dark Souls games are trial and error games? -
The opening tutorial tells you how to attack, block, dodge, lock on etc and 99% of the games can be tackled by doing that. The first enemy encounter tells you that you're in a state of conflict and the first death will tell you that you can die.
So you don't have to fail in order to learn the solution. You already know the solution, and just fail at doing it until you finally do it.
There are some elements and sequences that surprise you or present you with a seeming impasse though. The first time you encounter a mimic chest. Questlines that can be missed or failed. Treacherous NPC's. Missed encounters. Needing a fire resistant shield to proceed in that tunnel on Demon's Souls. Seeing if you can drop to a ledge or survive a long fall.
Most of the time it's just do what you learned at the start and don't die.

The core theme of the game is persistence in the face of adversity, or perseverance, or any number of synonyms. The game has some trial and error, but I think it's less about memorization and more focused on a pattern of continual learning. You learn about the systems through your adventure, I don't feel like Dark Souls Del Numero Uno ever forces trial and error (2n3 obviously being a bit different in mentality).

Dark Souls 2 would fall under that line, I'd say, as it had the most random bullshit in the series. However, 1 and 3 had traps and such that could be avoided/dodged if you were observant enough.
