Out of the ones i've played this year, my two favorite would have to be Rivals of Aether and Slap City.

Both are great games if you want your fill of Smash but don't want to fork out 60 bucks for ultimate(300 more if you have to also by a switch).

I'd recommend RoA if you want a bit more competitive and serious smash clone and Slap City if you want a fun and more comedic version of smash.

Salt & Sanctuary is a great one. Still need to get to Iconoclasts, but has always looked cool.

      Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadsville
i hadn’t even realized I’d spent hundreds of hours playing it until I checked my steam hours. It’s my second most played game besides Garry’s mod.
Its a tile based, city reclaiming, zombie game, much better than its two predecessors. I highly recommend playing it. Even the first and second game have experiences of their own.

          Touhou 10: Mountain of Faith
I generally love the Touhou series and import every official release, except the fighting game, from japan on CD-ROM, but 10 is my favorite out of them all.

If Hotline Miami counts totally those two games. A couple of games I can just sit back and enjoy.

That's a hard one! Ones that come to mind are:

LIMBO - One of the first Indies I played, and gave me a great appreciation for them. It's phenomenal atmosphere and minimalistic visuals only work BECAUSE it's Indie. Bought an XBox 360 not long after this was released, and it was one of the first games I got.

              Don't Starve
              Bastion
              Mark of the Ninja
              FTL: Faster Than Light

Rocket League. It's so polished that you can barely tell it's an indie game. Unfortunately, my opinion of it has been tarnished a bit by them releasing Rocket Passes on top of crates on top of the entry price.

Limbo. But Machinarium and the first Hotline Miami are runners-up. All three of them have great soundtracks.

Evilquest, it was a xbox 360 indie game. It was an rpg like the original zelda game but you play as a bad guy

I would have to say The Long Dark and This War of Mine.
I understand some people don't like The Long dark because it is kind of a walking simulator, but it is probably one of the most pure survival games on the market right now.
The world for This War of Mine is just amazing.

Depends on how you define indie, it being very vague term nowadays.
Do you mean in literal way of "independent" ? Self published only ? Only including self-published games would exclude games like Bastion
But most definitions include original Doom . There should be no denying of Dooms influence in gaming and the gameplay still holds up 25 years after and it still has active player base so thats pretty impressive.

Probably something along the lines of "non-publisher studio without a parent company or investors."

Clean definition of "indie" is a mire once you go down that path.

yea that's what i assumed but so many people seem to have different opinions of "true indie" so just something i thought was interesting to ask
