Only because the Empire doesn't give them the freedom and independence they want. The Empire could let Skyrim be and ally with them to fight the Thalmor. As opposed to pandering the Thalmor at the expense of Skyrim's citizens.

I'm pretty split on the matter, but I usually end up siding with the Legion. While the Empire did vassalize to the Thalmor, I think gaining independence would just give the Thalmor even more reason to invade Skyrim.

Think about it. Who would stop them? If the Legion couldn't defeat the Thalmor in a total war, then neither could the Stormcloaks. That's my take.

I think they could with the dragon born ass there ally. We are pretty Overpowered even without modes we could craft enchanted equipment that outclass dadric artifacts. Thalmor love using there destruction magic unfortunately it’s incredibly underpowered on higher difficulty.

I pick the Imperials because when you dig deeper rather than look at the civil war on the surface, you realize that a Stormcloack victory has a high potential in leading up to a new all-out war with Thalmor. And with loosing Skyrim, Empire gets even weaker and gets wrecked by Thalmor. And without the Empire, all the remaining provinces will have to bend their knee too.
