Elite: Dangerous newbie here
Hey folks, I recently got a copy of the game on Steam and begun playing. So far I haven't done much past the tutorial. Any advice for an utter newbie? What's a good way to start off the game?Tags: None

i really like voice attack but its pointless in my case when playing on hotas + vr

The diamondback explorer is a great exploration ship, you can get the jump range to over 30ly iirc. The cobra is a great all rounder to get started.
I enjoy exploring the most, looking for earth like planets and undiscovered systems. Finding interesting stars like pulsars.
If you can get a hotas, it makes the flying that much more imersive, head tracking and voice attack are great also.
Getting involved in the community goals is a good way to earn some cash and have fun. You can find info on the Frontier Forums https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumd...ommunity-Goals

asp is great because of its cocpit. however its one of worst ships to handle in whole game. just stopping this ship is like pressing breaks on fully loaded truck riding on icy road. all im gonna say is that diamondback>asp when it comes down to exploration and it costs a way less than aspOriginally posted by Damian Cunliffe View PostMy tip would be... do exactly what I did when I played it (unless this doesn't interest you, in which case don't do this) -
Get an explorer ship (I always used an Asp) and fit it with all the correct addons for exploration (D-class addons if I remember rightly are the best for exploration, though this may have changed since I last played over a year ago) and get out there into the endless unexplored galaxy. Civilized space, with stations and whatnot, is all well and good, but nothing compares to being totally alone, in the middle of nowhere, in space nobody has ever been to, scanning new planets and chillin out.

The latest update has brought some incredible new features into the game. I play on PS4 at the moment however was gifted a copy on Steam so will make the change to PC once Ive got the spare money for a good HOTAS. Currently Explorer Elite and Trader Tycoon. Havent spent much focus on combat other than with NPC's as part of missions. Have loved exploring the galaxy and doing trade missions and have just started trying my hand with the new mining system.
As others have said the game has a very steep learning curve. Theres thousands of YouTube videos out there and tutorials specifically aimed at brand new players. Theres already some great tips from other posters.
Take your time with it, learn the basics and expand from there. The game is only limited by your own imagination. Find what you enjoy doing and make the most of it.

I was thinking of getting one of those two ships. Glad to see I was on the right track.

My dad played the original Elite game back in the 80's and the most memorable thing from his experience was docking and getting the computer
Some things never change I guess XD

I played ED for a few years and it's worth knowing right off that it's a very unforgiving game, it will not hold your hand at all but you absolutely can make your own fun. The community over on the official forums are great and will help you in any way they can.
As mentioned, watch out for the ship insurance, play offline (solo) whilst you learn the game then head into PVP and just find something you like doing and get stuck in, other things will come your way as you play but like I said the game refuses to help you or set you up with anything, you just have to forge your own story and playstyle.
Good luck and enjoy the black!

my best recommendations for newbie player would be.
-buy fuel scoop (allows you to refuel for free close to active stars)
-find a station in a system with a good economy and make it your home station. do quests there to earn reputation to get better quest rewards.
-chnge your ship asap. id suggest viper or cobra as a first ship replacement
-join on events if you are able to get to them.its a easy legit way to get some coin without exploiting game.
-dont attack other ships without scanning them first. if ship you attack is wanted you will still get bounty on your head if you wont scan it first.

its a waste of weight limit and space on ship. it bugs quite often in front of station where it waits in a quee for eternity to enter station, but its also suicide device on bigger ships.Last edited by Pantsu Hunter; 12-22-2018, 01:00 PM.
