  • concerned about censorship in games.

The other day I was playing casuals in Rainbow 6 siege with some friends when the usual banter in all chat Occurred. "I'm going to fuck you!!" exclaimed some one on the enemy team this caused much laughter on our side as we recounted the last match trying to figure out what the fuck happened to make that guy say that. I cleverly responded "Finally I'll lose my virginity." . When suddenly the chat box in red disapproving letters " Your message was not sent and will be reviewed due to the word v**gin**". It's been a while and I can't remember the exact wording but for the purposes of this discussion it's close enough. I was honestly shocked by the message and angry that I was deprived of banter with the enemy team. And angry that I had this nanny forced upon me like I was a naughty child that needed to be taught how to play correctly. Especially in a game where ten men and women come together to brutally murder each other in the most realistic environment possible. The feeling from that has left a sunken feeling in my stomach and I have no desire to play Rainbow 6 Siege again. I would rather be free to be offended then forced to not offend.

It is a real shame and your instinct is correct. Just stop playing games that do this.

Relatedly, apparently Battlefield V had the word 'Nazi' Censored.

      Think about that.

The game is set in *WORLD WAR 2*.

      Shit's gone bananas man.
I am five and a half feet of pure poutine-fueled rage.

Battlefield 5 even has “DLC” cencored unless you put “free” in front of it

Dude the game ain't about World war 2 its about cyborg women in a world war 2 like setting XD
Jokes aside things can only go even more down hill until companies wisen up to the fact we just want games not live services or politics.

Censorship sucks, it seems that the only games free of censorship are indie games

This is why I mostly play games from Non-AAA companies. A much better bang for your buck all around.

Playstation too will cencor more games and not just Senran Kagura. The reason for this is apparent the moving of their HQ to Silicon Valley. And California is overly progressive.

It was sad to see Sony going this way, the US arm is even censoring Japanese releases if I've understood correctly.

It's not everyone (Edit: heck it's not MOST people) around here. But you wouldn't know that without living here unfortunately.

They have to protect themselves against the players and, especially, leftist media. Because if it is revealed that you're able to say 'virgin' or, god forbid, 'nazi' in their game then that is tantamount to being literally Hitler! Guilt by association.

I really dislike this harmonious censorship system. I prefer that they have a pre-established word filter that is on by default, but give people the option to turn it off. Also allow people to add more words to their personal word filter and allow them to ignore/block people they don't like. The amount of words that these games lock out or ban people for are getting more ridiculous by the day. Of course if you read what kind of chat system China requires, it might become more clear why a lot of these games go that way.

Even games like Warframe are having problems with this.

I keep it pretty simple really, if you censor your game outside of age rating board and govt imposed regulations, you'll not get a cent from me. I mean if Sony wants to lose the majority of weebs, fine, like why should I buy a censored game on PS4 when I can buy it uncensored on PC or even Switch? I just hope japanese devs jump ship and release more stuff on PC and Switch.

Heh, I remember the debuckle with Rainbow six siege couple months ago. Some guy got kicked by this censorship problem simply for saying "negro" in chat. Problem is, he was either Mexican or Spanish (don't remember now) and he was simply saying the word "black" in his native language.
