What do you think of the gaming year of 2018?

What is your opinion of 2018 in terms of game releases?

To me it was one of the weakest years ever. Even for indies. The only game I can think of that I cared about this year was Into The Breach. I guess Soul Calibur 6 was decent too. But beyond that...I got nothing. Though the jury is still out on Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

Didn't buy much, enjoyed what I played, only 2 refunds, big companies bellyflopped. Overall a good year so far.

Each year, I see myself stepping further and further away from the AAA market, for numerous reasons, and delving deeper into the indie market. I suspect 2019 will be no different.

I'm just glad my type of traditional gaming has its own splinter and not every release is a F2P game on smartphones or riddled with MTXs.

It was alright. Wasn't as shit as 2014 but any year will be a let down when it comes after last year.

It was a mixed bag but I'm fine with lesser games since 2017 had the best ever imo

2018 was the year that a critical mass of gamers finally decided to stand up to the corporate bullshit ruining the industry. Though I think this will lead to the collapse of the AAA industry I don't care, they can lower their budgets. I know shareholders can only understand incremental improvement and graphical fidelity and hours of voice acting are something that developers can point to as proof of incremental improvement to these shit heads but it's dominating development priorities to the degree it is killing creativity an inflating budgets like no one's business. I am so glad indie titles I like such as Kingdom: Two Crowns and Enter the Gungeon made their way from the PC to the Nintendo Switch. PC gamer buying a Switch for BotW btw.

    Pfft.
One of the worst years in gaming I can recall.
Literally purchased only 3 2018 games.
    - Kingdom Come: Deliverence
    - Shadow of the Tomb Raider
    - INSOMNIA: The Ark

Mind you, I don't play on consoles, but have an extensive backlog that I pluck away at when the time is available.

It's not been the best year for gaming, but that's good hopefully it means they try harder next year or they just try to monetize the games more than they already are.

Over the past few years the AAA publishers have learned just how far they can push gamers, no doubt they will try again next year.

I've enjoyed God of war and Spider-Man and spyro, hopefully crackdown will be good next year because I loved the first 2.

P5 amazing. Ni no kuni 2 was okay. DQXI fantastic. And the release of FFXII The Zodiac Age, fucking hell yeah.

Outside of that, I played a lot of older games. So I'd say it was an okay year but not as great as previous years. And all the corporate b.s. that went on was a bummer. But I'll patiently wait for next year and see what comes then.

I though while it was a rocky year with out a doubt and full AAA release it was fairly poor over all.

I enjoyed Red Dead Redemption 2 mostly from it being GTA cowboy addition and who didn't love that?

I was a bit perturbed with God of War it seemed like they wanted to do more with the Nordic setting and mythos but it felt like, to me, that it was rushed to much.

Truth be told i avoided Fallout 76 because i predicted that a Fallout 4 but on line was going to be rocky at the best of times and i was sadly proved right.

I did give Pokemon another 60 dollars to play Lets Go Evee because Pokemon Red was one of my first games i ever played and was the first Game Boy game and I over all enjoyed it, not especially hard but a fun time killer.

And aside from a few tries int he indy market at the suggestion of Yahtzee reviews it was a slim year for new games, i mostly went back to old games i had on my Steam, another 100 or so hours with Fallout 4 and a few mods i read about while on deployment, there is always Overwatch for my shooter itch and Conan Exiles if i feel like loathing everything for a few hours. Nothing quite makes ya madder then not seeing a big ass lizard and then dodge rolling over a cliff to your doom to really get a person going.

I hope that 2019 is better i look forward to the new game from Obsidian, Outer Worlds. Here's hoping things get better.

I've played a lot of games that were in my backlog this year thanks to Valve's Proton effort to make Windows games to run on Linux, and that includes finally completing DOOM, Prey, Fallout 4 and a lot of somewhat recent games. So to me Valve made the whole year, no kidding, their work is amazing in this field. Monster Hunter World is also a great release, I've dunked 100+ hours in that, plus Nintendo is having a blast with Smash Bros, Katamari ReRolled and The World Ends With You. It's like someone at Nintendo is randomly pointing finger at my favorite games. Indie-wise it's also a great year, a game that went somewhat under the radar for most people is Cultist Simulator, and it's really amazing, I absolutely adore that game. I recommend MandaloreGaming review if you are not familiar
    .
Also Sunless Skies is releasing soon, Spintires: MudRunners is also a good game if you like simulators.

Overall I'm really pleased with 2018

I wouldn't put it up there with some of the very best years I've ever had in terms of all time favorites and dream games, but it was pretty good for me. Played plenty of great games this year, love my top 10, and don't even have time for or access to probably 20 games I want to finish or play.

Below elevated the year for me though.

Overall? A net positive. There have been a lot of negative, no doubt. Sony's anti-nudity policy is obviously idiotic. I've seen a lot of triple A studios doing lots of weird decisions that I vehemently disagree with. There have been game releases that have proven extremely disappointing, whether it be the games being unfinished, glitchy, plagued with micro transactions or political propaganda (you know the kind), and so on.

However, if you just remain patient and don't preorder or buy games on launch, you can pretty much avoid getting burned by any of that. There are plenty of new games that I bought this year and that I'm thoroughly pleased with. Games like Monster Hunter: World (PS4), Shadow of the Colossus Remaster (PS4), Vermintide 2 (Steam), God of War (4) (PS4), Valkyria Chronicles 4 (PS4), Red Dead Redemption 2 (Xbox One)... I could go on with this list, but you get my point.

I'm also glad Shenmue 1 and 2 got a re-release, so I don't have to buy myself a Dreamcast in order to play them.
