Well Merlin.
There is a reason I play Layton at winter, I live in Denmark, it is cold, dark and you don't wanna go outside. It is really a game I think is nice to take it slow with, just... Sitting all wrapped up in a blanket, a big pot of tea, no rush, everything is slow and cosy. That's the kind of game it is and how I like to play it. It is a time to relax game.
Kind of people who use sudoko or cross words to relax I suppose.
I think they are done with Xenoblade for now, I mean... Where do you go from here? The two worlds were connected because it was actually our world split into two. So now we've been to both worlds, and both worlds has been re-created to become their own world which is no longer a slave to the old world, so they don't even want to merge back into one, they are too independent now.
HOW-EVER! That Xenoblade is over doesn't mean that the "Xeno-verse." is over! Remember, Xenoblade is actually part of a much larger universe that include "Xenogears" and "Xenoverse." both are actually being refereed to in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Though you need to be a fan to catch it.)
SO! There are two options here, either remake of Xenogears or Xenoverse, which you would be fantastic if you ask me, the stories in those are great but the gameplay very out dated and lacking.
OR! There is a new Xeno plot line going to a different times ones again and isn't as directly connected to blade, again like the other games. connected, but not AS directly connected.
Ni No Kuni 2. Well the game wasn't awful, it wasn't broken or unplayable or anything.
Heck, pure gameplay wise it was superior to the first Ni No Kuni game, as much as I love the world and story of the first game the combat... really is the worst part about it. It's not a very good combat system.
The combat in the new game how-ever is great, no kidding.
But yeah, it is just sad because all the elements are there, the wanting to make the best game they possible can is there... And they just miss the mark! That's what makes it sad.
If they had been able to bring in a script writer from Studio Ghibli like in the other game, then maybe... It would indeed have become a little heartfelt gem like the first one.
But sadly... It was not to be.

Ugh...as a DS collector I am ashamed to say I still haven't really played Professor Layton games and I have all of them....even the Phoenix Wright team up game. I love the concept, but haven't had the mind to sit down and do it.
Also did Xenoblade 2, it was a fitting end. I wonder if there will be a 3, or if they will start fresh with a new world and universe to play around with though.
Sucks about Ni No Kuni I heard good stuff about the first one.

Yeah that stuff bothered me as well. The main story is a step below a Fire Emblem, and the character development ain't great. As far as being a fun romp, though, it delivers in my opinion. Especially since hard mode.

Fair warning! Big ramble on the horizon. I love the first game and hadn't had much of a chance to talk about this one.
It is a shame, because all the elements are there. The graphics and designs are of course top notch, the ideas are good but then... Well.... All the good ideas are just dropped on the floor.
I mean Roland! Roland had such potential! He is in our world, he sees our own world go BOOM! Everything is fucking gone! he goes to Ni Nu Kuni, he shortly asks. "Am I dead?" ... and that's it.
Erh what? ... I'm sorry what? As far as you know, YOUR world sploided dude! Can we talk about that? apparently you have wife and child, and Evan kind of becomes your replacement for that, I could see Evan becoming your emotional anchor in the midst of all this anguish. You need Evan and a purpose to distract you as much as he needs you.
And all these cities we go to, it is like... They go through the story beats as they are supposed to, but never go beyond the simple beat. There is never time for character exploration or natural character nor world growth.
and again such a shame, the elements are all there! The ideas are all there, but they are never allowed to go beyond. "okay we did this, now we do this." It feels very mechanical and devoid of any true emotions.
In comparison to the first game, the three main characters actually went through archs that lasted THE ENTIRE GAME, not just their own little section of it. It felt much more personal and heart felt, it felt sincere. This really doesn't.
It is a shame because clearly everything went into the games, clearly they wanted to make this the best game humanly possible, but it missed the marks and I wish they had better story tellers to formulate the story.
I will also say, while I like the initial idea. "Okay I was kicked out of my own kingdom, fuck that, I am just going to build my own from scratch and make it my own way." a very Japaneese way of thinking, but admirable.
the outcome is not only naive (If it was only naive, I could say okay, that's the kind of game Ni No Kuni is.) But it is... it just... Doesn't work.
I know! Let's make world peace by having a world peace treaty signing! And then let me become the Emperor of the fucking WORLD so everyone will live under my peaceful rule!
...... I... erhm.... I think that is "Doctor Dooms" motivation from Fantastic four.... Evan, couldn't we just have kept it as. "I am going to build my sanctuary and allow it to develop naturally, let it be a sanctuary in a trouble world and let it set an example for other leaders."
Again, i like the initial ideas! I like the idea of Roland a leader in our world becoming a mentor to Evan, I like Evan instead of searching revenge builds his own kingdom, I like the idea of going around forging friendships and alliances across different nations of this world. All these are very good ideas that fit together.
Sadly... They never come to their right. The game gets confused and well... A good idea is not enough, it needs a good execution. And while the technical execution in gameplay is superior to the first Ni No Kuni game. The execution is story telling is extremely lacking... You can tell the absence of Studio Ghibli in the script writing department.

I like NNKII but the story is meh. And if I story is meh I have trouble getting through a long game so I inevitably burned out on it.

Wish I could make myself keep going through DS. Love 2 and 3 but something about 1 just doesn't mesh with me. Maybe it's the difficulty, which sounds strange since I 2 and 3 are probably in my top 20 of all time.Originally posted by Scott Knightley View PostDark Souls 3
