I was checking my Xbox Live profile a couple days ago and I realized that I barely had any achievements of most games I played. One struck me specially, I only had around 56% of Arkham Knights achievements and I was wondering how the hell could I have just that considering I played about 60 hours and completed everything (except 20 Riddler trophies). Turns out most of the achievements I haven't got were virtual training ones, which pissed me off, because I find them pretty boring and made me look like I barely played the game.
Also with The Phantom Pain, between the 360 and the XBO versions (yeah… I bought the game twice… and digitally on 360…) I played more than 150 hours and I only got 38% and 45% respectively.
What are your thoughts on achievements and trophies? Do you care enough to get as much as possible? Do you think you haven't played the game "properly" if you get few of them or you think it's a way devs have to make you play the way they want?

Achievements are nice to have around, especially for the completionists.
I've never really been the type to obsess over 100%-running a game or gathering all the achievements, but it's nice when the achievement is difficult to earn, or requires the player to accomplish very particular or situational tasks.Last edited by Neon320; 01-05-2019, 10:07 AM.

A lot of achievements are made cheap by allowing players to get easy achievements. It might make some people happy, but if achievements are given out like candy then they lose a lot of their charm for me. I never really cared much for achievements when I played World of Warcraft as well. I just did the ones that gave a decent reward. They were treated just like another quest with a different name.
I feel that achievements should be crafted to make players enjoy doing the more complex and difficult parts of a game to make the game feel more rewarding for learning how to be better at it rather than having achievements rain down from the sky by just gaining levels or picking up your first item.

I used to work for achievements because I felt if I didn't have them then I didn't really play the game. I'm glad I'm over that now. One of the reasons I enjoy the Switch is because it doesn't have anything like trophies or achievements and let's me feel like I'm done with the game when I feel like I am.

Yeah I think of achivements or trophys like a bonus. If they seem like they might be fun ill give em a shot. I play games for story and the gameplay. Seems some are obsessed with with achivements but hey if thats your jam then go for it. For some people achivements seem to have an OCD effect lol. I must have touch of it because open world games i must see every inch of the map..idk??

When I play a game I set my own goals of what I want to accomplish, and if that doesn't satisfy all the predetermined achievements, then so be it. In other words, don't care.

Right now I would say most achievements are really just fun little challenges you can do. Some I find humorous others just fun to complete. But really they work even better when gear is on the line. like how halo 3 did it, giving specific armor for achievements. when they factor into small cosmetics in game it make the achievements actually worth something

I rarely play games without them anymore. I love going out of my way and play a certain way to get a few of these.
Hell, I don't even play retro games without them either, lol. Check out Retroachievements.org, they put out some achievement sets for old games. The Megaman X series have some really fun (and challenging!) ones to get.

I tend to be a bit of a completionist but I focus more on playing all the game has to offer and less about the achievements. I like to hunt them but some are just boring and badly designed ( hate the "kill X low level monsters" and achievements of that kind). I also tend to buy games way after release while on sale because I don't have much disposal income for gaming so a lot of times if the game has a multiplayer mode and multiplayer achievements, noone os playing it and so I can't really get them. I still try to 100%/platinum games I like and the achievements are reasonably attainable.

I am on the far end of the Achievement spectrum as one could classify as an achievement whore. I live for the sound and notification, even my phone text alert is the Xbox achievement unlocked sound. 100 percenting a game gives me sense of joy and fulfillment in addition to that of completing an excellent narrative. One gripe I do have, I believe someone mentioned earlier, is being forced to play multiplayer mode to obtain 100%. I don't care how good or popular the mode is, playing multiplayer is something that the chore/annoyance for me.

I generally ignore achievements and trophies, if I get one I get one if I don't I don't I'm not going to lose sleep because I didn't collect all 20 wizard foreskins in a playthrough. Wheren I really get annoyed with them though is when someone judges your worth in a game by how many achievements you get in it (I have a mate that does this, he got so annoying that I left a discord chat with him in it because he was being that annoying about it.)

For me achievements separates ppl who want to play and feel joy by it, and those who are achievemnts whores that need some purpose to be able to enjoy game. I think they are nice think to ppl who need to max everythink but they are not really hurting those who are not interested in them.

Are people really conned into it? I do think it can be a shortcut for developers rather than putting more interesting content into the game or an ingame reason to do something. However, I also think that the people going after the achievements genuinely want to. They derive some fun or entertainment or sense of achievement from them. Nothing wrong with having them, just let me turn off notifications for them and hide them.
