    Best RTS Games EVER

I'm just gunna put this out there... Total Annihilation and Dark Reign are my all time favourite RTS games (and I would argue some of the best of all time) and it breaks my heart to not have anywhere to go and play people in these games. Are there any other good ones like this (that arent Starcraft) that have an active scene to play in?

all the above are great games I certainly agree BUT, the question really is, what base building RTS games are out there (other than Starcraft 2) that currently have a good active, online player base?

The Starcraft 2 trilogy. Even though the single player lost some steam in LotV it was still a blast to play through.

Man, this is so hard. Anything from Westwood makes the list for me. Dune2000, C&C, Red Alert, Tiberian sun. Even though EA was half responsible for Red alert 2 I'm gonna count it as a Westwood gem too.
Warcraft 2 was the tits. Age of empires and Total annihilation were awesome too.
I wish the days of the sexy base building RTS would come back.

Warcraft 3 probably my all-time favorite, the hero system is just a lot of fun. Starcraft 2 is probably clsoe second, both the games have just a very smooth and clean feel, nice design, solid competitive feel. I quite enjoyed red alert for the fun factor, but less for serious 1v1

I have always been a warcraft / starcraft fan, even since WC Orcs and Humans but when Planetary Annihilation came out I thought it was going to dominate the RTS market and even though I think its pretty solid, they didnt market it well enough (kickstarter, so not a lot of marketing funds), and its sorta petered out.

As for active ones...I don't think there are any active RTS other than SC and SC2. Maybe the AOE remaster has people playing?
Thank you for answering my question! Everyone telling me what their favourites were but not many have mentioned if they know of any games with an active player base!

Regarding Frank Klepacki, don't know about you, but Tension from RA2, hands down best track!

My view is due to my time in the military but Company of Heroes is my epitome of an RTS. The way that real life weapons and tactics were handled, plus the way maps devolved into blackened cesspools of shit and blood the longer the fight lasted. Pure brilliance.

If I was forced to pick one I might say Age of Empires 2, or maybe Sins of a solar Empire - Rebellion.

But Age of Empires 1 will always be really special to me. It was the first RTS game I ever saw or played around age 10 (didn't have a PC yet, just consoles) and hearing that haunting music as I saw my civilization advance from the stone age to the classical world... it just fired up an obsession with history inside me. I guess any history-based RTS game I played would've had the same effect but it was AoE 1 that did it, so that's the game to blame for having like 500 books on a huge shelf in this room... all history.

The genre is all but forgotten these days. I never really played anything but starcraft 1. If you want to play against other people...well good luck I don't know if thats a thing. But if there are good ones for single player, I'd like to know them, because I do like the genre for single player story, odd as that may seem. I really liked it in starcraft and warcraft games.
