  • What is your favorite unknown game?

So, if you're like me, you've been gaming for probably a long time and probably have stumbled upon a diamond in the rough every now and again.
I want to hear from anyone in this post: What game of little-to-no status have you played, and is your favorite?
I'll start with mine: Einhander on PS1.
Einhander is a 2.5D shooter that was made by Squaresoft back in 1997.
And yes, I mean Squaresoft, not Square Enix.
Einhander has a really neat Mechanic where when certain types of enemies were destroyed, they would drop their weapon. if you hovered over the weapon, you would grab it and this weapon would be apart of your arsenal. Weapons would range from rocket launchers to minigun to laser beams to frickin' star wars light sabers (they were called beam swords, but c'mon, it's a friggin' light saber.)
On top of that, weapons had different functions based on positioning. If you pressed the triangle button, you could raise a weapon above your head, or below your body with your single mechanical arm. (Hence the name, Einhander. In German, it means one-handed. Which is a reference to the bastard sword.)
Rocket launchers below the body would shoot straight forward, but above, they would become homing missiles, which were useful for defeating enemies before they even appeared on screen. Shotguns could shoot backwards, Chainguns could be aimed diagonally or forwards, so on and so on.
And on top of that, if you get a game over, (and trust me, you will) Any weapons you pick up on the battlefield will be available next time you pick a loadout (from three different types of ships) in your next play through.
And my god, the sound effects they chose for these weapons, and for the game in general, is so satisfying. The mechanical whirring of the shrimp as he swerves and jumps around the ground, The sound of the Juno as it rips into enemies, the "boom" of said enemies as bullets, rockets, and shells rip through their metallic bodies, it is amazing.
Speaking of sound, the music. I can't do the soundtrack any justice hear, just look up the soundtrack online. You want a good starting spot, try assault, dawn, or shudder. The entire soundtrack is good, but those are my favorites.

The boss fights are really fast paced, and can get pretty insane at points, (look at said shrimp from earlier, seriously, he is a great mid-boss.) I can recall every single boss and mid-boss from this game, they are all great.
Now, i do have to mention again that this game IS from the PS1, so the graphics have not aged all that well, though they aren't really eye-bleeding like some games from this era. *cough* OOT *cough*
And this game also doesn't have multiplayer, which to me was a REALLY big missed opportunity.

This was my sort of mini-review on a game i really wish would get more traction. What games do you know of should get more traction? Let me know down below.

Sounds interesting, if i can find it online or on steam, i'll check it out. (I'm always a sucker for dark-realistic worlds.)

I love a game called Crusader Kings 2. It was made back in 2012, a lot of people bitch about the dlcs but you can get most of the collection for about 100usd. Check out the live action trailers they made when you watch the launch trailer. All are accurate to the game.

Also there's a fantastic mod called elder kings. Check it out!

I have to argue the point that Crusader Kings II is an "unknown game." Paradox Grand Strategy, of which Crusader Kings II is a member, constitutes its own subgenre.

As of this posting, on Steam alone, the title has:
      • 20,000+ reviews
      • An average rating of "Very Positive" (90%)
      • 165 user-created guides
      • 1,900+ workshop items
This, Sudo, is not an unknown game. It is, however, a superb game. I, for one, am thankful that it is so well known given its unique gameplay and artistic qualities.

It's a well known game in certain circles. It's very very grand.

I've had my eye on that game for a while, as I've head the book. But I've been holding off since it was episodic and I knew it wasnt going to launch with all the pisodes. I can't find any information anywhere if all the episodes have been released yet or when they are going to drop the remaining episodes. can you shine some light on the subject for me please?

        Dwarfs!?

I love it because I love dwarves! Also, the tutorial guy is voiced by Simon from the Yogscast. It's an entertaining little game about running a colony of dwarves and trying to micromanage everything for as long as you can before you get overwhelmed.

Runers. Roguelike twinstick where you combine magic to create spells. Looks like dogshit but it is fantastic.

Although thanks to Steam and years of existence of the internet these games became more popular outside of their country of origin, but I'll still recommend them.
              • Red Comrades series
              • Etherlords 1&2
              • Space Rangers
              • NIght Watch
              • Pathologic

I really like the game Two Worlds. Dunno if it counts as an "unknown" game because I think I remember reading a review about it in Game Informer.

Something funny I remember is that on the back of the case in those stupid advertisements they always put on them it read, "It's like Oblivion on steroids!" My brother and I used to joke that it's because of how bad the game was in comparison and was more of an OD on steroids. The game wasn't that bad, but it wasn't even on par with Oblivion. It had super cool armor though.

This one was interesting and hardcore too! I remember it being hard. Had co-op if I remember right.

One of my favorite, recent, relatively unknown games is a PC game called DUSK. It's available on Steam (has about 2,000 reviews, so I'm not sure if that qualifies as 'unknown'). Its a horror-themed homage to the early days of 3D PC FPS (wow that's three acronyms at once!), in the same style of Doom, Quake, and Unreal. The graphics also are intentionally dated-looking in the spirit of the classics, but the art decisions are phenomenal. Multiplayer is a blast if you've got opponents to play with, and the campaign is certainly not a half-assed afterthought like so many modern shooters. Every mission of every act, just when it feels like it may start to get old, throws in a new twist to keep it interesting and you on your toes; from the start of the game to the finish.

I like it so much I may do a full review of it one of these days.

Lost planet 2, cameo out at the wrongest of times. I can argue it is one of the best Co-op experiences ever. Unfortunately its PC port was a mess and does not work...

I played a bit of Lost Planet 2 when it was new. It was pretty fun but luckily I played with 3 friends. I heard that the AI was terrible so solo single player was apparently a bad idea.

Urban Chaos on the PS2 (aka Urban Chaos Riot Response)

Rocksteady Games' masterpiece before Arkham Asylum.
Whatever you love, I probably hate.

First modern Urban Chaos I believe was TPP and nobody gave a damn about the game but Riot Response was just balls to the wall awesome brute-fest with a high production value. Just pure gameplay, ass tingling kill cams and arcade-style replayability. Great pick

the games i keep going back to once in a while and never get bored of playing are Discworld (1995) and Discworld 2 (1996) . 2 games that are based on the Terry Pratchett universe. Pure joy and humorous to play. There have been a lot of requests for a re-release/remake of there games to sell on GOG.. Sadly none knows who owns the IP for these games any more.. not even his daughter Rhianna Pratchett
So if they try to remake/remaster this game they will just end up getting sued by some random douche who keeps this IP for themself just for this reason..

Have you played Discworld Noir? It's the third adventure game in the series, and is really well done. If you like the police procedural Discworld books, like "Guards! Guards!", you will really like DIscworld Noir. It's a pain to get running on a modern OS, but I was able to get it running perfectly by using a Windows XP virtual machine.
                Working...
