  • The end of gaming?

As someone who listens to a fair amount of Youtube it has begun to occur to me how negative a lot of the gaming news is. It seems like as Youtube and other various forms of media become the norm for getting news, That there has been an ever increasing amount of negative news - Have we entered in an era of truly bad games? or are we just being convinced or pulled into the idea that everything is bad?

or is it the fact that only the Bad games are getting the attention of Youtubers and others because that's what gets the clicks?

I found myself getting more into Youtube because i was finding lots of great content about good games but it seems my feed has become more and more filled with negative rants? I am all for a bad game getting what it deserves..

But now talks of a new video game crash? Really? for every bad game there have been 2 or 3 Good or decent game released...People really need to stop promoting this fear, negative mentality, Doom and gloom mentality

Lets give the bad games a beating but lets also acknowledge the Good and Decent games that need promoting

I don't know what circles you are moving in that you are getting this kind of vibe but from my personal opinion there have always been good and bad games... gaming went mainstream in newer generations so maybe that is why you hear more about bad stuff since that is how "news" work. Good games are good and do not really need any attention... we all know which games those are. If you want to change your doom and gloom perspective stop watching the doom and gloom news.

Bad publicity won't be the end of gaming. But I have no clue how to make normies aware that some games are just not worth the money. I really dislike that there is no quality control for games, resulting in mobile game type of crud appearing in AAA titles because cashgrab is fun for the whole family!

I have no issues with pointing out crap games but also have content promoting Good or Decent games that get over shadowed.

My buddy recently bought a ps4 for RDR2. He's not really a "gamer" though he likes pubg and cs go on pc. Anyway he was telling me that he needed to get a racing game and footbal game and he'd probably get Madden. I was about to open my mouth and tell him about how shit EA and 2k are, then realized that not only would he not give a fuck and think I was a dick, but that he didn't really have any options. It made me feel instantly sad and powerless.

That is true, when it comes to Madden - Although if he likes Arcade type football games there is Mutant League Football which is actually fun to play

A lot of these are questions i am asking fellow Gamers of their opinions and thoughts for conversation purpose. I am well aware i have the ability to not watch negative content which is what i do, but i was talking about the Youtube feed that seems to be filled with the above mentioned and now talks of a gaming crash.

And no there are plenty of Good games that do not get any attention because of the fact that there are just to many games out there.

        Bingo!

It's a sad fact that negative news and rants get way more clicks on YouTube, and that means more revenue for content creators.

It's mainly the big companies which have been getting bad press lately. Or rather bad press on YouTube... I think more and more people are catching on to the shill media and are starting to view YouTube personalities talking their heart as more truthful. At least that's where I am at.

From what I've seen many of the "doom and gloom" youtubers are also tiring of this trend. Jeremy and ItsaGundum have both stated they're tired of the shit storm because it seems never ending. It's hard to ignore when these companies fuck up. Plus more people tend to watch negative videos than positive ones. Jim Sterling once posited that people complain that his videos are too negative and then when he makes a positive one no one would watch them. I think as long as your youtubers are making some positive videos they shouldn't be faulted.

Publishers really pushed it this year, and for once people weren't having it. It seems like there's so much negative shit, because there is.

It will be fine in the end. The AAA devs will just become glorified mobile games publishers, and passion project indies will carve out a new tier of developers who make lots of good single player games that run 20-60 hours depending on genre.

What you say is a lie, what happens is that you like to play games that are clearly garbage. This is not the end, it is a new beginning where companies can not fuck us without consequences. We have never been better than today.

No i did not lie - i never denied that those games have left a lot to be desired i have admitted this in other posts that you didnt cherry pick from. Like i said i don't mind people being critical of games but i would like to see Good games getting the same attention.

Nor did i advocate that "gaming was dieing" i actually said the opposite if you read my comment - I posted this because i saw a youtuber suggesting that a crash was happening

So no i did not lie. But thank you, not sure what i am playing now matters

Some people spend more time raging about games and worshipping media personalities than they do actually buying or playing games... so they're going to non-customer themselves at some point, and the companies that used to cater to them will just move onto more laidback cash cows who are accustomed to mobile, service and whatever pop culture tells them is important/acceptable.

I grew up reading Diehard Gamefan magazine, and more interested in games like Xenogears or Castlevania: SotN than Goldeneye and Medal of Honor, so the state of Destiny and Division never matters to me now. The greed culture of AAA definitely bleeds out and I'll beat it back as needed, but even then, not a damn thing in my Top 10 for 2018 was part of that conversation, or barely touched it.

Hopefully, eventually the unsustainable AAA companies that have to bleed people dry just to exist will collapse, and nothing of value will be lost. Regular people will hopefully still get a chance to occasionally try something new as "Netflix of games" future becomes a thing in the absence of Gamestop.

I don't like belligerent people with no capacity for nuance, but at the same time, I'm glad to see customers have more power over games in recent years than games journalists. A more natural order and the lesser of two evils, by far... and it's not even close.

And yeah, in your original post, I'm in total agreement that there's sometimes multiple good to great games to play, and that's another reason not to even care what's happening in the dung heap of games you're probably not interested in to begin with. Backlash can be productive, but so can positive reinforcement... build up what you like to see. This year for me it was Below, A Way Out, Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden, Guacamelee 2, Hitman 2, God of War, Shadow of the Colossus Remake, Spider-Man, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Forza Horizon 4... and I still need to play through Vampyr, Red Dead 2, Dead Cells, Darksiders III and Celeste.

One of my favorites this year, but it will really depend on your taste. If you like tactical games and kinda punk, anthropomorphic sci-fi fantasy, check it out.

It's not going to end. Ever. It's an established industry. It will change with times though, as everything does. However, video game journalism died a long time ago just as any other industry journalism. Just look at any other entertainment sector, there are blunders everywhere and every year is rife with them.

Honestly I give as little credit to youtube game revieweres as I do to journos. I think the youtube side is also very guilty of producing clickbait content. But what's worse is the herd behaviour that is rampant on youtube. One negative video gets published by someone, you can bet the rest will have the exact same video up in a few days. I don't mind a little overlap, but this is getting worse as the mainstream media at this point.

What am I talking about? Just look at the videos of yongyea heelvsbabyface or even thequartering, if there is not at least 75% overlap in their content then there is none. Sites with unique and interesting takes are very few, and seem to have much smaller followings. So yes, clickbait and negativity what gets traction, that's why I'm not afraid to admit it, that recently I unsubbed from jeremy's channel thequartering as well.

There are still good games being released, if anyone would care to look past all the negativity. And it wouldn't be so damn fashionable to hate on large publishers. And I don't mean calling them on their bullshit. I mean the people who make a sport of hating on every game put out by EA or Ubisoft and the likes regardless of the quality.

I'm surprised to admit it but there is some toxicity in the gaming community when good games get dragged trough the mud as well for minor things. And it's not like the youtubers all play the game. One person makes a video criticising something, then all the rest start parroting it.

This site is the last chance for proper gaming journalism. We must make it count.

Quite to the contrary, I think this era of games companies being held responsible for their bullshit practices is going to ultimately produce a better time for gamers. Already we see a lot of Indi and AA gaming companies coming up to fill the void left by poorly behaving AAA publishers. These new companies are listening to gamers and trying to give them the experience they want for prices everyone is happy with. Eventually, they'll grow so large that they'll lose touch and sell out to bigger corps, the way Bioware did, but that's just part of the process and in doing so they'll open the way for more up and coming game publishers to make their mark. So long as we vote with our wallets and hold game companies responsible for their behavior, we'll come out of this conflict on top.

I agree 100% I may not have conveyed correctly what I meant to say , I agree the backlash is needed an warranted and overall is good for gamers. But do we need the same youtuber putting out 5 BFV sucks videos and then subsequent you tubers following suit. What brought me to post this thread was the 3 or 4 videos in my feed with the titles of Gaming crash coming or end of AAA games. Which I don’t think we have reached that point yet

While I agree that seeing the same narrative from every gaming Youtuber can get old, the other side of that is - while many of these people do have overlapping viewers, they will each have viewers who are familiar only with them, so they need to share the story in order to get it to those people. Also, I often find that when I hear one of these stories, I look at my other subscriptions to see what they think about the same subject - do they have the same take? Do they bring something unique to the narrative? And sometimes it's just about how they can make this tragedy entertaining while keeping it in the public consciousness. In the internet era, people have short attention spans and we need to keep reminding them that the game they wanted to buy is a rippoff so they don't give into temptation and buy it anyway.

For example, I'm a huge Fallout fan. I was never interested in Fallout 76, but the thirst for some new Fallout would have probably convinced me to buy it at some point. Even after I heard how disappointing the game was, I found myself looking at the lowered price and wondering if it wouldn't be worth trying, even so. The fact that I had several Youtubers - whose opinions I held in high regard - repeatedly warning me about the game, is alone responsible for me not giving in and paying for it - which would have rewarded the company for its bad behavior.
