  • Police 911. The Best Arcade game you will never play.

About 10 years ago I happened upon a gem of a game collecting dust in a movie theater. Most people had long given up on venturing outside to find video games. This theater at one time was an entertainment megaplex. Arcades, miniature golf plus the theater of course. Until the family entertainment side shuttered it was a real attraction. At first this machine appeared to be a standard arcade light gun shooter like Lethal Enforcers. But it had some strange barriers protruding from the sides and top of the machine. These were infrared sensors that detect your position. I inserted my quarters and picked up my gun. What a surprise to find out that the game was sensing where I was as I shot at enemies and tried to avoid getting hit. When in the car chase I had to literally duck behind the door as the windows shattered above me. On the subway I had to physically lean to the side as I let the bullets fly by. Words alone cannot describe how awesome this game was. When my time ran out I stood there smiling with my dad and then felt a sense of sadness. When I was a young kid this game would have been the rage of the arcade. My friends and I would have the time of our lives begging for more quarters as we ignored our pizza. But as a cynical young adult I realized this game drew little attention as a time waster for kids who didn't have cell phones yet as they waited for the movie. One day when I win the lottery and build an arcade in my town you can bet your bottom dollar Police 911 will be there. Enjoy this footage.

Looks cool! Wonder how difficult it would be to find one of there where I live.

Not a clue. I looked it up and there were two games made. Though it seems like only 1 was ever released in NA. They came out in the early 2000's. Let me know if you find one.

This was one of those games that I always saw in the arcades back in the early 2000s. There was this and a boxing game (with big fake gloves) that used a similar full-body motion control system to play. Damn good fun. It was a step up from the other static rail shooters, sort of like Time Crisis with the cover system. I always saw it alongside my personal favorite, Tokyo Wars, an arcade-y tank sim with a cabinet that had feedback every time you fired the cannon. Pure arcade goodness.

It's sad to see so many games in arcades nowadays are just huge versions of mobile games like Doodle Jump or Flappy Bird or whatever. It's hard to find ones like this anymore.

Yeah arcades are shit now. Recently I've been to a skating rink and an indoor go kart place that had arcades. Both are the variety where daddy throws a bunch of cash on a card, hands it to kids, kids are back in five minutes after blowing all the money. We need a section on this forum where people post real old school arcades if they can find em.

Very difficult to find standalone arcades anymore in my experience. Most are almost afterthoughts that are included with things like laser tag and go-karts.

Very cool! That how to play thing at the beginning is awesome. Arcades are basically dead now, at least where I live

There is a place around me called Round1 that actually has a vast collection of arcade machines and they are always adding new games as well as a lot of arcade cabinets from Japan. You should ask the owners of the cinema if they are willing to sell it

Eyyy I remember this one! I played it quite a few times; beyond revolutionary for the time.
This and Ocean Hunter deserve the title.
Whatever you love, I probably hate.
