  • To Switch or Not To Switch

So I have run into a bit of an issue, a silly though to be sure. I do not know if I should purchase a Nintendo Switch or not. I currently own a PS4 Pro and Xbox One X along with a gaming PC and I often find my time limited in what I can play and often the PS4 and Xbox get left behind as I primarily game on my PC. However, at NYE party my friends and I were all play super smash and let me say that was some stuff right there. On top that all of my friends now own a Switch and the thought of being to play smash all the time sounds good. I just don't know if I can go for another console on top of everything else. So I want to hear from people that own one if its worth it and what to get on it as well. Also I have a weird relationship with Nintendo and I have always tended to shit on them more or less for business decisions and the rather zealous fan base that seems to follow it so part of me is conflicted on that as well. That reason is stupid I know. Anyways let me know what your take on the Switch is and is it worth adding to my already too big collection of game consoles. Thanks everyone!

    **UPDATE**
So after much thought and discussion from here and with my friends I am gonna get a Switch! Now the next step is deciding on physical or digital games.

    **UPDATE 2**
So bought my switch and everything and will get to using it after work. I know that this topic was originally geared towards my decision, but I hope that the discussion helps others in their decision making. So if anyone else still wants to throw their opinion in the ring that would be great!

I got one for Xmas from a rather tone-deaf friend (it's the thought that counts). I spent a few days on the Nintendo e-store but can't find anything that interests me to play on it. I was shocked that's been out for 2 years, as there's very little software. You've got ports, and Nintendo franchises. That's it. Very little to no original third-party games. Never opened it, tossed it in the closet. Not a console gamer though, so your mileage may vary.

Maybe you should consider selling it to the OP for a reduced price, rather than losing in it your closet? That way you can spend the money on something you'd rather have and they get a cheaper product.

Major reason to get the Switch is the portability. If you're always on the go, then Switch is the way to go. It looks like you have a lot of consoles and a PC to play at home. The Switch has a bonus of connecting to the TV.

Another reason for getting a Switch is that it is the system of choice for uncensored Japanese games (many of which can be purchased in physical form from PlayAsia with English subtitles as "Asia" versions).
Also, the Switch is getting a decent amount of shmups...
For me, the Switch is replacing PS4 and Vita.

This is definitely something I have been considering, given Sony's new censorship policy I don't plan on supporting them in the future. I pretty much have the PS4 for CoD but Blops 4 has really soured my enjoyment of the CoD franchise (I know I have somehow managed to enjoy CoD up until now) and it has no purpose at this point. Since Switch is getting a lot of the Japanese games it may be worth picking it up for those and the combined Nintendo games.

Yeah I would almost exclusively play this in handheld mode if I got one. While I do have all these platforms its gotten to the point where I only play 1 or 2 games on them, minus the PC where I play more like a few more games consistently. I think I am suffering major burnout from ongoing franchises and what not that exist on PS4 and Xbox and since I have never owned a mainline Nintendo console it may be a refreshing thing.

Consoless always fell under this category for me of like are the exclusive title relevant to me, as a pc gamer most of the time they are not but rarely something comes along in a hand full of franchises ware I've bent mostly in my youth. I would say there are probably a crapload of games you could play you just gotta sell your self on some games, I've wanted one for a while because I could escape and play a game in public. but I agree to with the guy who was saying you might wanna wait its been 2 years and they are bound to make a hardware revision at some point soon.

That's not entirely true, it's nothing but a rumour.

Dude, get your Switch today, it's great. I have mine since launch, and it's been an amazing console.

Its definitely tempting too, I just don't want to buy and not play it which is biggest concern. I could always get it on amazon where I have a reasonable amount of time to return it if I don't play it as much as I thought. The struggle is real though, even if the struggle is silly.

In my opinion think of the switch as a extension of what you do when you game. You love to game but this weekend you're on the go but still want to enjoy some fun.. the switch has you. Fortnite fan and have to scratch that itch while in the bathroom for that hour long drop? Switch has you there. There hardware will hopefully see some interesting changes soon but if you love to game and got the money, its got fun titles to enjoy.

I will say the portability is a really nice thing. The titles do look interesting as its pretty much completely different from anything I normally play or have played in the last decade. Money definitely not an issue for me at the moment. More so knowing if I will play in consistently or not.

Great choice. My Switch is probably my favorite console, and I own many of them. It's the first portable system that allows me to play home console quality games on the go. I love my Vita, but when I play a Vita game, I can tell it's a game designed for a portable console. I don't get that feeling when I fire up a Switch game at the doctor, or on an airplane. Being able to play a game like Doom, Breath of the Wild, or Dark Souls on the go is a really amazing thing. Not only that, but I'm impressed with both the first party Nintendo games, and the overwhelming third party support the system has going for it. I'm sure you are going to really dig the system once get a chance to play it! Have fun!

OP has decided for Switch, but for others I will describe my case. I have a quite good gaming PC, not going out much at all, and yet I have and enjoy Switch. I don't have any other big console, I am using Switch in both - handheld and docked (tv) mode.

Honestly, if you have spare money and already own a PC, I think Switch is a good choice. Well, at least if you like some of the exclusives like Zelda (BoTW is great), Mario (I am probably noob, but I found even the basic game often quite hard; would recommend), Pokemon (this was probably the main reason I bought Switch - to experience new Pokemon games and give something back, after playing several games on emulator) or any of the others. Or if you spent time commuting or waiting, Switch can be invaluable.

About the new Nintendo hw, I am pretty sure they said they want to support Switch at least for 5 years, so that's now still at least 2-3 years? Since raw power is not Switch seller anyway and they promised the support, I would not hesitate buying Switch even now.

I definitely am looking forward to picking this up after work today and the exclusive games will be a breath of fresh air from what I regularly play. I will probably pick up some indie games as well because many of them are on switch and I while they are also on steam I like the idea of playing them in handheld where-ever I want. I will probably post a pic of everything at some point!
