HOT TAKE! Piracy

If the game is no longer in circulation, or the developer has made it impossible to get on pc (red dead 1 is a good example) then I find piracy morally justifiable. The devs won't get the money either way.

I think people are confusing DMCA which has been abused a lot, with EU's new Article 13 which will end up making abuse the rule rather than the exception. It's in fact so destructive that the rest of the world will have to threaten the EU with a complete cut-off from the global network if it's not overruled.

The DMCA has nothing to do with EU, it's an US law. And the people abusing the DMCA system of youtube have nothing to do with the EU or EU laws either. Most of these false claims can be cleared up by a counter claim. Of course that takes time which is a problem for the reviewer, but I don't know how did you put the EU into all this. How youtube handles DMCA claims is their own policy.Originally posted by k4far View Post
I give you false DMCA claims of Escape from Tarkov on a channel that was not showing them positively. EU exists to excuse abuse.

Source? What you're saying is unrealistic. By the same thinking car manufacturers could take down reviews of cars. It's their car in the video, so they have the right to take it down right?

You can think of the EU what you want but in most terms they do infact protect the consumers. DMR on the other hand is a huge issue in my opinion. I never checked the studies wich claims that pirating does not affect sales but slowing your perfomance, blocking and in some cases even disabling your game does. I'd say it depends on the developer/game. If it has a shady DMR and a history of shitting on its consumers I would not shed a tear.

In few months all of the video games fans living in Europe will not be allowed to give bad reviews to the companies that are in partnership with Kotaku/Polygon/Daily Dot your videos about games they are covering for money will be taken down under accusation of copyright infringement (DMCA) and the European Union will justify them saying it's their game in the video they are right to take you down.

There used to be a time when pirating Hitman: Contracts was more legal than buying it because record labels are more powerful than god, can dictate all human policy on a whim, and that game included a sample of a single song whose limited time copyright ran out. It was illegal to sell the game until IOI made a new version without the song. Because obviously if you need to play halfway through a game and then park your character in a room with background audio, that's a suitable substitute to buying a music CD, so any and all measures including lethal force must be used to eradicate that game from existence, and that will with 100% certainty increase music sales because inverse burden of proof is best burden of proof.

Fun fact, for the longest time, if you wanted to play Marvel VS Capcom at home without breaking the bank, the only way to do it was through piracy.
There are a ton of games that you can only get through piracy, or used sales. Both are just as profitable for the game creator. The problems caused by piracy are less damaging than some of the things DRM had done.
