Right now, the X1X and the PS4 pro cost 400$. So basically, for this price you can get a previous-gen console...

Time has passed since they've made the PS4 pro and X1X, so it can only be better, right ? Yes !

Take planes for instance, how many passengers the first plane could hold ? And look how many people travel per year now ? So, surely, each plane must have 3 000 seats, right ? No, there are just more planes...

What makes you guys think the evolution of these past 2-4 years was something that will be visible and tangible for the end user ? Maybe some of that advancement will be "54% less power consumption" ! Pretty underwhelming when you want to brag in front of your friends about your "next gen console"...

For 400$, the "next gen" consoles will be even more behind PC ! PC got what just recently ? DLSS, RTX, FreeSync... Their games are going to look soooo good and you will spend 400$ or 500$ on the "next gen" console and at the first Digital Foundry video you will think "man, I wish I had that !"

And I love console and hate playing on PC !!! But we are so behind already ! Don't you want RTX ? Or the next big thing ? Yo want to pay 400$ to get 20% of additional power ? And you'll call that "next gen" ?!
Its almost certain that much of the new tech will be seen in consoles too. It always has been. That doesn't mean they will be top of the line hardware. We don't even have any announcement from any company on a new console anyhow. Though I must admit I was very underwhelmed when PS4 and Xbone were announced, it was at the sweet spot of PC gaming where prices were really good for a new PC. Still, the point is I think, it matters more what you can do on the hardware than what the hardware is.

I do wonder though if the trend of half steps will continue. Nintendo did it for many years and I was genuinely caught off guard with the PS4 Pro and XboneX

I consider myself primarily a PC gamer, I do enjoy having consoles but It's rare I'll pay more than $300 for one, I believe my Xbox One S was $299 when I got it, my PS4 Slim was $250 and the Switch was $299 so I've kept it consistent.

$400 is a good price point.

Should be no more than a standard computer. So roughly $400 to $600 would be a good.

Should have an option of under $300. I personally never buy systems when they get released. A month or two later they drop in price slightly, so I usually wait till they drop to $250 and get them when they fix the bugs or defects in them (Switch being the only exception)

Every console I've bought in the last 15 some odd years I end up playing a couple days then never touch again. PC4Life

400 should really be the most expensive consoles get.

As long as I get hardware value for money, up to $600. But then I assume that the hardware is really good and it is sold at a loss.

Since I do so much editing work, I just don’t have space for games and all the video stuff I’m working on. And external hard drives add up....

But to return to your original question, the only console I bought shortly after release was the PS4, which was a mistake imo, but I got it because I missed out on the PS3. Now that I have all 3 of the big consoles, I’ll definitely wait for a price drop next gen. I have enough to tide me over until then.

PriestTroit "Nintendo has things like the DS, DS Lite, 3DS, 2DS, 3DS XL, 2DS XL, and similar versions for the Switch"
DS = that's not a special version, that's the... well that's the DS...
DS lite = it's a slim version, it doesn't add anything substantial
    3DS = that's not a special version, that's the... well that's the 3DS...
2DS = that's the 3DS with a missing feature (just like the Wii Family edition or the Wii mini...)
3DS XL = this is a good example, you get something MORE, screen real estate and better 3D
    2DS XL = it's an improved version of a... lesser 3DS !

What remains ? The 3DS XL. Everything else is either irrelevant (DS and 3DS are the base consoles ! And remain the only option for years). The DS lite is just a slim version and the 2DS are lesser versions of the 3DS.

So, I don't know why you choose Nintendo as an example. Because if those you've listed count, then the Xbox360 had the Elite, Arcade, Core, Slim and another-revision-I-d'ont-actually-know-how-they-called-it. It makes 6 versions of the same console ! So no, Nintendo isn't a pioneer or anything that field.

"And similar version for Switch" ?! You know what, I think you're trolling, it's either that or you are just making stuff up as you go along to win an "argument" on the internet...

I think the Arcade/Core versions only had 256MB of memory available. Each game save file takes up like 5MB, you presumably have multiple accounts if it's a family console which takes up its own amount of data (doubling or quadrupling the save files on top of it), you can't have DLC, can't have game updates, and God help you if you owned more than just one video game. When I got Oblivion, I couldn't even make a save file without deleting all my progress for other games on all accounts. Never even could install the DLC that came with it for a year! Good times ROFL

Nintendo has things like the DS, DS Lite, 3DS, 2DS, 3DS XL, 2DS XL, and similar versions for the Switch. You even brought up that the Wii has options. They all sell for varying prices. For example, I bought my daughter the 2DS for less than a 100 bucks because it's "kid-proof" and was a third the price of the 3DS. Nintendo really is the reigning champ when it comes to offering their systems at reduced prices in exchange for differing levels of technological specs. Nobody else comes close.

PriestTroit You couldn't play Oblivion ? Why ? You could play from the disc... So, I'm not sure what you mean... Why would you need a HDD to play Oblivion in 2006 ?!!!
And the Elite / Arcade / core was just an example, I'm not saying they should release a console without HDD, it's not 2006 anymore... Just cheaper/more-expensive consoles with more or less specs, that's it.

"what Nintendo does by releasing versions with varying levels of technological specs" ?! What ? Are you from a different timeline where there are two types of Gameboys, Gamecube and what not ? Because the only thing Nintendo that would fit your description are the Wii Family edition and the Wii Mini...
While MS had the Elite/arcade/core and the base Xbox and the X1X (slim versions don't count), if anyone, MS is the "leader" for that kind of thing, not Nintendo.

And as a reminder, MS added better stuff along the way (X1X = more power) or proposed better versions right out of the gate (Elite 360 = added HDD) while Nintendo REMOVED stuff :
Wii Family edition : no Gamecube capabilities...
Wii Mini : no Gamecube capabilities... Composite output ONLY !!!

So, you want the Xbox two and PS5 to be cheap and that they do like Nintendo did... removing things ?!! At this rate, the cheap versions of the PS5 and Xbox Two will be less powerful than the Xbox One... Talk about a next gen...

I don't think the should do the Arcade/Core version again. Man, that thing was such a rip off. If it doesn't come with a hard drive so that you can't play most games on it... what's the point? I couldn't even play Oblivion on mine lol.

They should do what Nintendo does by releasing versions with varying levels of technological specs. Maybe different Xboxes with less computing power or a version without a disc drive or whatever. I bet they could think of something.

Aerrae it's not the point at all, that's why I was talking about the price to make one. But you're 100% right. Ask kids to be honest as to why they buy an Apple :
"because everyone has it" (so they want to fit in)
"because it's expensive" (so they can show they are the kind of people who : deserve the best / are rich enough to afford it)

I'm not kidding, "it's expensive" is the reason #1 why kids buy these phones. The price IS A FEATURE !
