That was a totally gimped console, though. Look at the 2DS for an example of how to do it right. It can still play all 3DS games that I'm aware of, but it's "kid-proof" like the GBA is/was and only costs something around $100 or so new. Point being, it's a real gaming device.
I used to have the arcade version... you couldn't even play Oblivion on it. Microsoft should give it another go, but this time not make a piece of junk lolLast edited by PriestTroit; 01-07-2019, 06:06 PM.

MS did try that with the Core\Arcade version of the 360 which I believe didn't have a hard drive, and it looks like they're considering a "lite" version of the next xbox too. I'm not sure how popular these options are though, they will have a very limited appeal. Given you're going to have this thing for years and will be buying £50 games for it, saving less than a hundred quid to get a lesser model really doesn't make much economic sense.Originally posted by PriestTroit View PostThat's how you do it. If Xbox and Playstation did that as well, it would be awesome for everyone.

Honestly that's why I like consoles and hate PCs sometimes. Since consoles don't have legs, they don't try to run away. I got a security system not to keep people out, but to keep my PC from escaping into the wild. It can be quite the hassle.Originally posted by fenrif View Post
Nothing stopping you from gaming on a PC while sitting in a recliner.
A console would have to be £300-£400. Any more than that and I'm better of just buying a new component for the PC. Consoles don't have the legs of PC while looking and playing worse. The only competition they can offer on hardware at this point is price.

Using a mouse and keyboard effectively is more difficult on a recliner than it is using a chair and tabletop. I know from experience, too. Back when it first came out, I used to play Overwatch on a laptop while sitting on a couch. There's no good way to kick back and type while simultaneously using the mouse

Hey man want to buy this sandwhich? It's ham and cheese. Only $500. If you say no we will all know it's just because you are poor. Because that's the only possible explanation, right?

I think I payed $400 for my PS4, but if I remember right the Xbox One was originally priced at $500. I would be fine with paying five big ones, but it would have to have something to make it stand out. One of the primary reasons I switched from the Xbox over to PlayStation is because the Xbone only sold for an extra hundred bucks because of that motion detector thing that came with it.... I don't want to pay for some gimmicky brick that won't be supported in 99% of games. I still have the one that came with the Xbox 360 which I only ever used once for that stupid Connect Sports game which came free with it (and didn't work properly!!)
I would pay the $500 bucks, but the console companies are gonna have to work to provide me something I think makes their console worth the extra 100 dollars. I'm not sure what that could be, but I'm sure they can think of something if they really tried.
If you ask me, Nintendo does it right. They release multiple versions of their products that cater to customers with varying price limits. For example, they have the regular DS, the DS Lite, the regular 3DS, the 2DS, the 3DS XL, the 2DS XL, and not to mention the new Switch models a user posted above... all for different price levels. That's how you do it. If Xbox and Playstation did that as well, it would be awesome for everyone.Last edited by PriestTroit; 01-07-2019, 06:01 PM.

These days, I'm content to wait years for the price to go down quite a bit.... I paid £425 for the PS3 on launch and that was the mistake of a kid with too much money on his hands- if I had that kind of money floating around now I'd spend it on PC upgrades. Nowadays I'd go no more than £300 for a console.

I'm going to think about this in Xbox One X and PS4 Pro terms. I think options and tiered skus will be key no matter how initially confusing iterative consoles might be to some customers... market the cheapest option to them and get on with it.
I don't want to pay too much, but I also don't want to pay $300 for something that's barely even an upgrade and is mostly just me paying for the same parts and plastic I already have in the previous box. I also don't want to pay $700 for something that's a big upgrade but hardly any content utilizes and isn't giving me enough gains on software I already own and most current game releases.
It can't just be a "best console version of Cyberpunk 2077" box with 90% of other 3rd party games not taking advantage, due to the install base being concentrated around a less powerful sku. I want to see scalability gains on cross-generational game content wherever possible. Make the development tools and distribution easy, so that customers don't have to beg companies for enhancement patches or beg you to pay them for it. Then a high end, pricier console will be an easy sell to someone like me.Last edited by Dub-Z; 01-07-2019, 04:44 AM.
