Right now, the X1X and the PS4 pro cost 400$. So basically, for this price you can get a previous-gen console...

Time has passed since they've made the PS4 pro and X1X, so it can only be better, right ? Yes !

Take planes for instance, how many passengers the first plane could hold ? And look how many people travel per year now ? So, surely, each plane must have 3 000 seats, right ? No, there are just more planes...

What makes you guys think the evolution of these past 2-4 years was something that will be visible and tangible for the end user ? Maybe some of that advancement will be "54% less power consumption" ! Pretty underwhelming when you want to brag in front of your friends about your "next gen console"...

For 400$, the "next gen" consoles will be even more behind PC ! PC got what just recently ? DLSS, RTX, FreeSync... Their games are going to look soooo good and you will spend 400$ or 500$ on the "next gen" console and at the first Digital Foundry video you will think "man, I wish I had that !"

And I love console and hate playing on PC !!! But we are so behind already ! Don't you want RTX ? Or the next big thing ? Yo want to pay 400$ to get 20% of additional power ? And you'll call that "next gen" ?!
Its almost certain that much of the new tech will be seen in consoles too. It always has been. That doesn't mean they will be top of the line hardware. We don't even have any announcement from any company on a new console anyhow. Though I must admit I was very underwhelmed when PS4 and Xbone were announced, it was at the sweet spot of PC gaming where prices were really good for a new PC. Still, the point is I think, it matters more what you can do on the hardware than what the hardware is.

I do wonder though if the trend of half steps will continue. Nintendo did it for many years and I was genuinely caught off guard with the PS4 Pro and XboneX

Those half steps start to get expensive. Sure, if you take X1 and X1X in consideration, it's just $1000 so you wouldn't have a very good PC. But if you take X1, X1X, X2 and X2X in consideration, you start to realize that in the long run, consoles are actually more expensive as time goes on.

I've just turned my X1X on like 15 minutes ago. Man, this is appalling, I'm not playing for a year and I took a look at what I've missed lately and the only thing that caught my eye was the last Tomb raider and the game is 2 times cheaper on PC... I have no idea what other X1 owners are doing with this piece of plastic, each time I turned it on this past year all my friends were on Netflix, Youtube or offline... I even start to wonder why people want an even more powerful console when they can't even make games for this one because "it's too risky, making innovative games could make us lose a lot so let's make another call of duty instead"...

This is depressing. I wish I was into knitting and not video games

It depends, i'm a PC dude so i hope consoles are strong so PC games don't stagnate as much, and we have more impressive games to use our overpriced hardware, so an extremely powerful PS5 or Scarlet at least better than a 1080ti on GPU side and a Zen 2 8 core CPU would be pretty neat,.
But i must understand that is not going to happen for under 500$, so yes i want powerful consoles which means 600$ consoles, and no i don't want hardware baby steps every change of a generation that means 400$ consoles.
