Assuming that the next generation of main console producers aim to release high end consoles that can compete with low to mid end PC's at the time of their release, what buy in price point would you be comfortable with?

I honestly would be fine paying more, if it wasn't such a compromise between PC and console level of graphics. I own a higher end gaming PC and I enjoy it, but I definitely enjoy gaming from the comforts of my recliner sometimes as well.

It depends, i'm a PC dude so i hope consoles are strong so PC games don't stagnate as much, and we have more impressive games to use our overpriced hardware, so an extremely powerful PS5 or Scarlet at least better than a 1080ti on GPU side and a Zen 2 8 core CPU would be pretty neat,.
But i must understand that is not going to happen for under 500$, so yes i want powerful consoles which means 600$ consoles, and no i don't want hardware baby steps every change of a generation that means 400$ consoles.

Erebus Really, Japanese games aren't plagued by day one patches ?! Interesting (not sarcasm)

Alot of the japanese games don't have big day one patches like the western ones. Mainly because they're finished when launched. You're right in the case of Bethesda with the older copies.

Erebus Huh, then brace yourself for a deception ! Your games are physical ? Good, but like Spyro, only 500Mb is on the disc, you need access to PSN to download the game. All the games that were broken and had a day one patch, guess what ? Those games will be broken forever ! But that's cute, some people still think they will be able to launch their disc in the future...

I don't own anything ms or nintendo except n64 and original xbox. I play games on playstation consoles and I get mainly physical copies of games. So I do indeed own my games.

Do what you want and I'll do what I want. Anyway, have a good one.

Erebus "You won't "own" any the games" oh because you own your games right now ?! The Wii online services are about to end, what do you think will happen with the games you "owned" ? Out of all the X1 games you "own", how many are/have :
    DRM
    Day one patch
Day one downloadable content (like Spyro trilogy, not like DLC)
    DLC
    ?

Go on, make the list of all the games/DLC you "own" and fall under any of the aforementioned and tell me how you're going to play with them as soon as MS shut the online service ! See ? You don't really own your games after all, do you...

"x1x only came about because of 4k"
Price of the X1 + X1X = $1000 (or you can wait 4 years to get the next gen console while playing the X360...)
If MS had released the X1X (which would be just called X1), how much you would have to pay for it ? let's be generous $1000. So what ? That's the same price ! Yep, but you would have had 4K 3 years before...

So yes, you can tell yourself X1X was only $500 but only if you've waited 4 years while playing the X360. If not, this gen cost $1000. I was generous before (trying to make YOUR point stronger), now let's try to be generous to me. Let's say MS "skipped" the X1 and directly released the X1X in 2014 but this time the X1X (just called X1) would cost $800... This whole gen would actually be $200 cheaper ! And you get 4K 4 years in advance !!!

Can't you see it ? And I'm not even good at math ! The $500 console you want ISN'T cheaper than the $800 I'm talking about ! You're just short sided like people who buy a cheap TV and wonder later why the electricity bill is expensive !

If people want to play on the cheap, they can go for the streaming console
if they can afford it, they can get the $500 console (which, let's be real, can't be really better than a X1X...)
and if they want a premium product, they should go for the $800-900 console (and in the end, they would save money)

That's the best case scenario, MS would release 3 versions of the next gen. If you guys have it your way, YOU will regret it down the line... and actually not that longer after purchase.

I call it now, if MS only release a $500 console, once the dust is settled people will be utterly disappointed (so basically just a month after release, once DF made enough video to make a solid conclusion) I call it now, if the console is $500, you won't like the future DF videos... mark my word

Upgraded consoles like the pro and x1x only came about because of 4k/vr. They're optional and most gamers aren't buying them. There's nothing to suggest that it will happen next gen. A streaming console is a dumb idea. You won't "own" any the games and it's the same shit ms tried to pull with the Xbox one at launch but worse.

The price point is around 400 because that's what people are willing to pay for a console. That's 90% the reason why. The price matters more than what it can do. The PS3 launched at 600 (I think) and no one bought it til the price was lowered way down.

It's not extortion. LOL. It's standard in consoles and pc.

Erebus Why do you think MS will release a cheap streaming console ? For people who want to play on the cheap.
    X1 + X1X = 1000$
X1 + X1X + X2 + X2X = ? and the power you get for this price ? Compare this price and this power to a PC paid over that same time span... Which one is cheap again ?
Consoles are still slightly cheaper than PC, but if the next gen is made of mid-gen refresh, then no, PC is actually cheaper on the long run.

I'm a Console player, I don't like PC (my friend gave me one, I've downloaded cool old games and I don't even play them at all). If the next gen is $500, it won't be a true generational leap and basically the Xbox will be the iPhone of consoles so I wouldn't bother. If it's $800 or $900, the console will be amazing (look what MS was capable of doing for $500 with the X1X !!!) but there's no way in hell I spend that. Did you notice something ? There is no scenario that is good for me !

I'm not talking about what would be good for me based on my incomes or whatever, I've remove myself from the equation. What good is a "next gen" console if it's not next gen ?! You said : "be able to play that gen's games"

That's extortion ! Pay $400 or you won't be able to play the games that could easily run on the previous console ! That's extortion man. Granted, the game wouldn't look as good, but it could run. Wolfenstein is running on Swicth...

So basically, what's left is "MS holds games hostage so I have to buy the so-called next gen even though nothing this console do could be considered "next gen" "

I've just turned my X1X on like 15 minutes ago. Man, this is appalling, I'm not playing for a year and I took a look at what I've missed lately and the only thing that caught my eye was the last Tomb raider and the game is 2 times cheaper on PC... I have no idea what other X1 owners are doing with this piece of plastic, each time I turned it on this past year all my friends were on Netflix, Youtube or offline... I even start to wonder why people want an even more powerful console when they can't even make games for this one because "it's too risky, making innovative games could make us lose a lot so let's make another call of duty instead"...

Well, the PS4 pro/X1X are just upgraded consoles of the base models which are around 250. I'm okay with 400 because of a few reasons.

Much higher, it starts to encroach on a pc price point. If you're gonna pay pc prices for a console, you might as well just buy a pc which can use mods and steam.

400 can get decent hardware for a console at the time they are developed and locked in. 6 to 8 years later the same 400 can get much better hardware for a console. It's also allows more people to play because it's not too expensive.

If I wanted up to date hardware/performance, I would get a pc and upgrade as needed.

A console is a cheap deal that guarantees that you'll be able to play that gen's games for 6 to 10 years. To a console gamer, each gen is a pretty decent upgrade.
