World of Mods

Hiya I made a game a while back using Unity and am hoping to learn better development practices. So I have decided I wanna learn to mod, my question is where do I start? What sort of tools do I need? Any advice or resources you can link me to would be much appreciated!


P.S Yes I am doing my own research on this as well, but nothing beats talking to people with actual experience.

I haven't done any modding since Tiberium wars so I can't really give any specific advice.
I'd suggest first, actually finding games you like to play. Then picking out the one that has the best suite of modding tools and support, something that will allow you to grow as an artist, coder, whatever you choose to make your area of specialization. I was lucky enough to find my passion for concept art and illustration from my time modding.

On a side note I hope the C&C remasters will have some good modding support so I can get back into my old love.

But WHY?

Why you want to learn to mod. To make the levels you wish the game had, to fix bugs, to learn gamemaking/programming, to make friends, to squeeze your hardware, to have fun, to create non gaming content...

The real question is what kind of game do you want to mod?
You need to know the game you want to mod first before finding out what tools you will need for such a task.

Quick examples:
Skyrim uses the "Skyrim: Creation Kit + others that shall not be named".
Witcher 3 uses the "Official Mod Kit + W3 edit + others."

Also if you are lost. There are plenty of tutorials on Youtube or even on the Nexus modding page.

If you wanna mess around with some modding, Relic Hunters Zero is a free game on Steam that willingly opens its source code to the fans so they can go crazy modding it themselves.
