  • Anyone else halting/slowing down their purchases this year?

I'm on the side that next-gen is launching in 2020. That means a lot of games coming out this year (if they do come out at this time) will be rereleased as PS5/Xbox Whatever titles in a "remastered" or "definitive" form. Because of this, I will be skipping out on a lot of games. I never had this problem in the past, I would buy games up until a month or so out from the new platform. But after all the rereleases this generation, I find myself urged to hold off on any purchases so I can experience the game for the first time on the better hardware.

Anyone else in this boat with me? I'm actually bummed by this notion because I really want to buy MKII, but I know damn well a definitive edition with improved graphics and all the content will release, because the same damn thing happened with Injustice.

I'll buy what I like and have been doing this for years now.
I don't buy many games throughout the year so slowing down would be kind of hard. Most games I bought last year have been out for a while or borrowed.

I've never bought a console the year it comes out I've always waited a couple years until the games improve.

If I buy the game then I won't buy it again, so you might as well wait until the next gen consoles come out.
A lot of games were released for PS3 and 360 then got released for the new gen, only the stupid would buy 2 copies of the same game.

What I fear is going to happen is companies will use this to withhold content so they can make a "remastered" or " definitive" edition for next gen.

Nah. GTA5 has added tons of new content since release at no extra cost. Huge amounts.

It hasn't added anything to me.
Online was a horrible experience to me and I never enjoyed it.
You might think differently but micro transactions and online updates are of no interest to me.
Some people will enjoy it and thats their right, for me however it was an obvious money grab.
They might do it with RDR2 but they might not.

I have GTA V for PS3 and 4, have fond memories from each of their online modes so I personally don't regret buying it twice. It has become a dumpster fire in the past few months though, and haven't made any memories since they releases the heists with the whacky vehicles, around the same time they started promoting Shark cards, which are really the only way to make reasonable money now.

I see RDR 2 going down the same route in a year or so's time, but I think as it goes through its beta stages it'll be fun.

I'll be sticking to a few major releases and niche games until the November game sales. I regret nearly every game I purchased this fall because they devalued almost immediately. There will be a few games I buy each month because I am taking game reviewing seriously, and I want to push myself to stay relevant. I probably will not buy anything outside of what I will be reviewing unless I anticipate the game becoming difficult to find in the case of switch physical games.

I am trying to, but Nintendo Switch has my full attention atm. I haven't played a nintedo console this much since N64.
I am mainly waiting for Division 2, Cyber punk 2077, Death Stranding, and The Last of Us 2. Waiting and watching, not buying... waiting to see if it good.

Honest question, not trying to sound like a troll -- what is keeping you so hooked on the Switch? Aren't most of the games right now just ports and re-releases?

Yeah The Switch definitely has a lackluster store. New releases and ports aside, it has the same selection you'd find crossing over Steam and the PS4, with the addition of old ass NeoGeo games. The only port i was genuinely happy about was Hyper Light Drifter because it has content that's special to the switch as far as I know, and it's pretty good content.

Lol its cool. to be fair I have enjoy PS4 playing Red Dead 2, God of War, and Spider-man but once I was done with those titles ... not much else that interest me.
Honestly its just going back to Nintendo titles that I enjoy. I have been playing D3 some on there, which is cool.
But mainly the RPGs (OCTOPATH TRAVELERS)
I haven't played many nintendo games since Wii either. With that being said, I guess its new, exciting and nostalgic at the same time.
So far I've enjoy BotW, Mario Odyssey, I will be playing the nintendo Bros U duo pack, I have enjoyed Bayonetta and I do plan on buying Dead Cells as well.
There are other RPGs on the nintendo store that look good too. Since Bethesda and Bioware ... ugh have no idea what they doing *face palm* it breaks my heart but... I need my RPG fix somewhere.

I plan on only getting 5 or 6 "big" games this year; Tales of Vesperia (my favorite game of all time), Ace Combat 7, Metro Exodus, Seikiro: Shadows Die Twice, Code Vein and Ghost of Tsushima (if it releases this year)

I'm going to struggle if Tsushima comes out this year. I have a 'personal' connection with that game haha (Japanese heritage) and I like the developer. I really hope it's a PS5 launch title. I'm selfish like that, and hell, it would look really good for Sony to launch with some top-tier games.

I actually had an increase of purchases this year because I've just become aware of the climbing prices of old Pokemon games. Black and White 2 are on Amazon ranging from $30-100, the old GBA games are sitting around 30, I fully expect Soul Silver and Heart Gold to get even more expensive, and don't even try to look at the Gamecube games. If I could find a copy of Pokemon Box for under $100 I'd be golden.

      Bruh I'm just chillin'.

I think it's been officially a full year since I've bought a new game, except for Doom when it was on sale. I can wait another year if new gen is coming out in 2020

I've got enough backlog as it is

My Geforce died days ago. It only works in zombie mode, as a generic VGA.

I have to buy a new GPU, but this is the worst possible moment.

Nvidia has just released the RTX series, but
-They aren't good enough for ray tracing, so I said "well, I'm going to wait for the next generation, when they will be powerful enough and affordable", and now have to eat my words.
-They didn't replaced the older generation on their price zone. The new ones are more expensive, and not much more powerful.
-Today AMD is the best bang for the buck, but I need CUDA, so I can't make a best buy, and I hate to help nVidia.
-AMD is about to release new cards, so in some months GPU new GPUs should be much better.
-GPU mining crashed, so prices should fall on next months.
-Nvidia still has a large unsold stock of old cards, so it doesn't want to sell the new ones, and doesn't want to reduce prices.

At this point, I can use a browser, but cannot even watch youtube at acceptable framerates.

So, I NEED a new GPU, and also should wait.
NEVER use any Procter & Gamble product. Specially Gillette.

No. You never buy old performance. Game demands are always rising. Always buy on the point of diminishing returns, which is the point where price starts rising not in proportion to the performance, which today is around the Vega 64 (or RX 570, for really low budget)

I'm not expecting too much that I actually care about to release this year. So chances are yeah I'm slowing down just cause nothing I really want is going to release.

I really don't buy all that much big stuff anymore. Hell I've practically skipped this console gens games entirely. Will probs buy Red Dead 2 sometime. KH3 I've pre-ordered. I think Persona 5 has a complete edition coming and I never bought or played the original.

I respect the last of us story but I don't really wanna play the tps bit for it. I can kinda sorta enjoy games like it but I never feel like they're worth full price, just my opinion.

The rest of my purchases will probably be obscure JRPG's on steam.

Oh yeah and Devil May Cry 5.

My buying of games has halted because the Steam sale ended.

I guess I won't be buying anything new if it's all re-releases this year. I don't buy anything new anyway, so it doesn't really affect me.

...until the Lunar New Year sale, then there goes my wallet up in flames.

It's actually possible we won't see as many remasters in this next generation depending on where sales go. The main reason so many happened this generation is because a lot of people bought say, PS4 who didn't have any game console in the previous generation so game developers and Sony were banking on those people hearing from friends or other means why these remasters were must buys. Seems to have worked as well because it's been going on all generation.

If anyone would ask the question "will we still see some of the better games from the PS4/Xbox One etc. release on the next generation?" I'd would say yes, but unless or until we see stories that talk about a bunch of people buying consoles who didn't have them this generation, I would think that they would slow down going into it. That said, there might be more at the start so the new systems have more options and don't feel as barren as previous generations, but it could easily still slow down at some point.

With that said though, I may end up buying less games just because my money is tighter for at a while to the point where I had to buy all the games I'm playing this month and next with pre-orders well in advance of their release.

I was one of the people who appreciated the remasters because I changed over from Xbox. The main ones I got were a bunch of Final Fantasy games, Last of Us, Heavy Rain, Uncharted series. Could be forgetting some. It was great for me. Hope they keep doing that.

Not really... I usualy don't buy games right after release anyway.

I've gotten into the habit of waiting for the "Game of the year" editions. All the dlc and less bugs. Yeah, I'm cheap and don't need to be first.

Not a bad idea now that those releases are becoming clockwork.
