I went under the naive assumption that people are honest about themselves. I didn't account for people being dishonest about being something that they are not. That only shows my biggest flaw: I always assume people are telling the truth until I catch them in a lie. But that's because I could never imagine lying to other people myself. Not even in an online forum where nobody knows me personally.
But back on topic: I'm not picking and choosing. No hobbyists should get a self described title. Just because you go on track days with your sports car does not make you a racing driver. I can list any and all sports and hobbies. Unless you make it the centrepiece of your life it's not what you are.
Oh I forgot, I know some people like to wear these as badges of honor, and someone rejecting them might make them feel bad. But it's basically the same thing as when SJWs wants you to call them Zhe or They, or attack helicopter. And they think I have an obligation to do so. Well I have about the same level of obligation to call them Zhe, as I have to call someone a gamer.

True, is like a home cook and Professional Chef.. Just because you can scramble some eggs it doesn't make you a Chef.....
Sadly statisticians make that error and pile anyone who plays Candy Crush, games on Facebook. Not to mention if you spend $20 dollars on game in year makes you gamer by their own criteria.

Of course the same can be said of any hobby, Gaming is a hobby and I call myself a gamer the same way I call myself a Reader, or a Roleplayer. The requirement of passion and knowledge are things I specifically included in my personal definition of what makes me a gamer because that's what it means to me. Other people can define it differently for themselves and call themselves whatever they like - I think I addressed that in the first sentence.
I think most hobbies have hierarchies in some way. Readers often define themselves by the kind of books they read - Fantasy, SciFi, Non-fiction, Educational, etc. Some readers embrace all of these and some are very specific about what they like and what they don't. I've known quite a few readers who are disdainful of comics/graphic novels and manga - but I love those as much as the others (always on a case by case basis).
Roleplayers tend to define themselves as "Narrative", "Simulationist", "Tactical", and so forth. There is actually a lot of contention between different schools of Roleplayer and what they feel is the best way to run a game.
Hobbiests will always define themselves in increasingly smaller ways in order to feel special amongst their crowded fan communities, there's nothing wrong with it until it makes them toxic to others in the hobby.

Define frequently.Originally posted by IndustrialHaze View PostAnyone that plays games frequently on either a console or PC.
Never mind, skip your definition of frequently. Your opinion of what constitutes a gamer is patently wrong, imo, and negates any weight or value in your opinion.Mobile game player's are not gamers despite what all the major corporations lumping them into the same groups as the standard gamer.

It just seems like you are picking and choosing which hobbies get a self-described title based on their enthusiasm, and which ones don't. Tennis players and gamers don't get one. But others do for some reason. And on top of that, it all goes out the window as soon as someone else describes themselves as one. Kinda like a person identifying as an attack helicopter... doesn't really make it so, but good enough for you.
Not trying to be confrontational. I just replied because I was confused and hoped you could clear some things up. And your response confused me even more.

The definition of a gamer is playing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Generally I think I see a gamer as anyone that invests hours into games every week and not just a few minutes here and there on their phone while waiting at the doctor's office.
