That doesn't hold up to logic. If we applied that to everything then everyone in a field that isn't the best of the best would not be labeled as their career.

A fisherman is not someone who makes a living off of catching and selling fish, it's a person who fishes, selling is not required for the definition.

A hunter is not someone who makes money off his catches, it's someone who hunts and kills prey.

Aidy Because you've been reading like 1/4th of my post and then responding and acting like you've debated down everyone's points, not just mine. It's one thing to be a pompous prick... but an illiterate pompous prick? Now you're taking the piss. Read and respond to ALL of everyone's post or just piss right off. I'm not interested in your half-baked response to half of ONE of my sentences. Nobody is.

They're games in the sense that throwing a paper ball in a trash can is a game... Everything can be a "game" that doesn't mean if you play it you're a gamer. It's not a catch all term... hell it only originated FOR video game players. It's already generous to use it to unite all of the hardcore gaming community of any variety of games.

No gamer is going to support that without a guilty conscience. Because it's highly unhealthy for the very industry that supports their hobby. It's a cancer and it will infect as far as we allow it to infect.

Complacency will lead to the end of gaming as we know it. The big boi companies are just waiting for that day when we all open wide and happily gobble up their 120 dollar deluxe gold hyper ultra mega ultimate edition game, 90 dollar season pass, loot boxes and mtx store.

You may very well be a gamer if you disagree but you'll be at fault for any and all damage that comes to your favorite series and everyone elses series. Supporting it is a selfish act that could very well lead to a dark era of gaming where nothing will be safe.

How much is it going to take for gamers as a community to learn? Do we need everything to be a battlefront 2? Because that can very easily happen. Just have the mentality that it's okay and that it'll never happen to your games.

Noobc0re isturbo1984 i still find it ridiculous to call someone a "gamer" if they are not making a living out of it.
But we can agree to disagree

I don't like to use the word gamer. But if I did it'd be anybody who plays a few hours a week on any dedicated console

If someone plays games and considers themselves a gamer then that's what they are.

At the end of the day it's just a label, people will always have differing opinions about what makes a gamer.

If you enjoy games, any games; even the mobile ones. Games are fun, no need to have a thousand+ dollar rig to max everything, if you gamers are all over now and it's kind of nice.

You're introduced to a new person, and you ask them how would they describe themselves. If the first answer is gamer, then it's a gamer. That's my definition of a gamer.

A person playing 3 hours of tennis a week wouldn't describe himself as a tennis player.

If you wish you can say that anyone who plays videogames for any amount of time regularly is a gamer, but that wouldn't be a significant trait then.

I don't know about that... games are systems thus if you play the game you are playing a certain system.

Gamer is someone who plays games to beat the game and push himself to improve. Once you reach certain level of gaming you understand it's all made of systems and gaming is all about recognizing systems and beating them fast enough. Playing games =/= being a gamer.

I believe that the moment gaming went mainstream and entered top 5 entertainment industries the word itself became meaningless. It is like defining someone who watches TV or reads books. How many books do you need to read per year? What sort of books do you need to read? And ultimately who cares about that? The stuff that matters is who shapes the industry - so who buys games, who supports micro-transactions, who goes digital over physical, who wants to stream gameplay etc. As stated on the first page of this thread: you play games and consider yourself a gamer? You're a gamer. Now get in line as your spot is no. 2.2bln. Welcome to the elite club 😂

i elaborated in my comment, but i think a reasonable "fix" is just to acknowledge there are gamers in terms of a hobbyist fo their chosen hobby... and gamers as far as consumers go. the two arent the same. a person can be a gamer as far as a consumer goes. butt hat doesnt mean they are necessarily an enthusiast of the craft. this applies to pretty much anything else. why not video games?

As Noobc0re pointed out, that would be a "pro" player or gamer. Whether you are talking gaming or sports, the term exists outside of the professional classification.

How old are you? And when exactly did you get into tabletop games? Reason I ask is I never really got into them. But I hear a lot of people talk about how they were card players, board gamers and tabletop game enthusiasts before they were into RPGs. And I wanted to ask... what did you guys all call yourselves?
