Toukiden 2 is a game that I would recommend if you want to play a Monster Hunter title without the mass amounts of prep phase shenanigans (made slightly easier in World). It's a joy getting the right combination of Mitama to make your weapon really powerful. I really hope we get a Toukiden 3.

That'd be my recommendation. You need to accept that they were doing an homage to their inspirations to not go "I know that trope/plot/archetype/line!" all the time, which I'm entirely fine with. Heck, the same people are working on a sequel at the moment for which I'm excited. I've called it 'A mix of Armored Core, Ace Combat and Zone of the Enders with the story presentation of Dynasty Warriors Gundam' on this very forum before. Project Nimbus isn't the prettiest game out there, but for a small-time team out in thailand they did a fine job. The best way to describe it is a kind of marriage between Armored Core and Zone of the Enders, mixing the former's weapon systems with the latter's use of six degrees of freedom.
I really wish they'd put out a light novel or something to fill in the plot and characters better, and really hope the sequel both improves on that and potentially has a fight agianst the one dream team we never got to see. (Imagine an Operation: Katina like arcade style mode with this) Of having Yuliana piloting the Mk2 Mirai with Mirai filling the role of operator for it. Considering we never get a straight fight between Yuliana and Mirai (both times it's after Mirai has been worn down by tough battles and Yuliana isn't thinking straight...) That'd be a killer combination and a 'dream match' against that with the new protagonist pair could be brilliant (and obscenely hard, thankfully god mode is a cheat because I'd have never finished the second Yuliana match up!)
As for a personal recommendation?
Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale. In a hilariously generic (seeming) JRPG setting, one overly cheerful (or is she?) young girl has a nightmarish debit to the Fair folk thanks to her father deciding to be the JRPG protagonist and getting loans for gear... meaning she either makes the payments on time or loses her home. The solution? Become the item shop to end all item shops (and potentially help an eclectic band of adventurer's improve themselves to basically leech off their vendor trash.) Yes, it has a nice top down dungeon crawler section, but you can actually ignore that entirely and make the payments. It's got a solid set of core mechanics and 'losing' means restarting with basically everything saved except interactions with people. (until you get their adventurer card at least.)
And a bonus because I'd feel guilty for not mentioning it.
Seraph. It's the future and a disturbingly rich cult is holding our protagonist in an oil rig turned fortress/prison/HQ for them. Things go horribly wrong, demons have overrun basically the entire place and warped the entire facility into a semi-randomized mess. The goal is getting free of the facility and potentially learning WTF is going on while doing it. The tools on hand? high agility 2d platforming gun and power combat with a curious progression system and bevy of weapons. Comes complete with a few impressively engineered boss fights, a scaling difficulty system where greater performance is more rewards and harder enemies, with (if you care) a rather unique backstory to figure out as you get through it.
Both of the above I got via Steam and haven't regretted them, but I've also seen very little press for either.The Once and Future DM of many table top games. Sorain on SV and SB, kknd2 on Fanfiction.net, kilokilonovemberdelta2 on Wordpress. Further Information Not Available Here.

Hammerhelm is a game that when I first saw it I felt like I was in love despite the game not really being the type I'd usually enjoy. It's a charming game where you do quests and typical rpg stuff for a town while also being the one buiilding the town.HammerHelm is a unique blend of third-person adventuring and town building gameplay. Everyone already knows about NieR: Automata, but I can't stress enough how amazing of an overall experience the original NieR was for me. Watching a few YouTube videos does not give you even close to the real experience. The gameplay is a bit dated, even a bit tedious in a few parts. Automata definitely got a true upgrade here. But the story is amazing, even better than Automata in my opinion. The characters are all just so much more interesting... Vastly superior to Automata's characters to me. You will see so many ideas in Automata that originated from the original NieR. The world lore and impact of the story is just so much stronger to me than everything that happened in Automata. And biggest of all, the soundtrack. I can't stress enough how amazing and impactful the soundtrack has been on me both inside and outside of the game. Automata's soundtrack is fantastic too, but most of it is all just a remix of the original game's music.

Lets see...
JRPG: I'll say Breath of Fire III/IV on PSP/PS1. Imagine Final Fantasy but you're a dragon, fun story, fun characters and solid mechanics.
RTS: Act of Aggression over on Steam, think command and conquer generals with updated graphics. Multiplayer can be fun if you look out for aircraft spam.
MECH: Chromehounds on xbox360, an amazing game that allowed you to build your beast from the ground up, every part individually chosen meant you could get pretty creative with your builds and the intelligence/scouting side of multiplayer made for some deep gameplay.
BONUS: For this last title, this one needs an update and to be brought to PC badly. Aliens Vs Predator: Extinction for original Xbox/PS2, marines vs predator vs aliens in an RTS game, as aliens you actually needed facehuggers to attack enemies to create any other kind of unit. Was fun as hell for its day.

Off the top of my head I can think of two games that I loved playing as a kid, but no-one seems to have heard of them.
Wild 9 for the PS1, a fun platformer where you pick up your enemies with a sort of laser whip and can throw them into various obstacles like spikes, electricity etc in order to get through the level, it was very amussing and so much fun.

UN Squadron for the SNES was one of my favs, it was I side scrolling bullethell game based on an anime about merc fighter pilots, it had a great anime look to it and such awesome music, it one of the reasons I took up the guitar. It's worth checking out.
