  • Uncharted 3 is the best online shooter ever - change my mind

I'm not a big lover of online gaming but I absolutely love Uncharted 3 online. I met so many cool people, the action is non-stop, there is no real "grinding" to do - you just play the game and level up, whilst getting rewards along the way.

I cut my teeth on cooperative mode - both the arena and the story. The bad guy DLC was great too.

Then I started playing competitive and had some fantastic matches. The first time I wiped out all members of the enemy team on a hot streak was one of my favorite memories in gaming.

You can still play the game for free on PS3. There's a level cap but beyond that, it's free forever. I of course bought UC3 so can play it whenever I like. There is also no scummy PS+ nonsense, which is something I absolutely object to as being completely un-consumer friendly.

Of course, the game was not perfect when it was released. Naught Dog were behind on their release schedule, having paid maps (which eventually everyone got) split the player base. I don't feel it did enough to reward support players like myself, who do the objectives and generally get a lot of assists in competitive, but it is a ton of fun.

There were of course cosmetic microtransactions, but these were unobtrusive and totally unnecessary, you got a ton of new skins as rewards anyway. However, some of the purchasable things actually looked quite cool (angel wings, Egyptian pharaoh mask).

I don't really like the look of a lot of these new online shooters - grindy, microtransaction laden and requiring the aforementioned anti-consumer online passes to play.

My other beef is that I can play UC3 butter smooth with no lag. I am yet to find a PS4 game that I can actually even get to the menu screen of online, my Internet is just not fast enough apparently (I live in the countryside).

I am consequently unable to play UC4 online, but that looks casual as hell and not fun.

So, will you accept my challenge?

Uncharted featured some of the most boring 'gunplay' I've ever seen.

I don't agree with this in the slightest. Sniper Elite is a much more satisfying TPS multiplayer, as is Black Ops 2 a more satisfying FPS multiplayer, as is Paladins a satisfying version of both.

Aren't the Uncharted games over the shoulder third person shooters? That already disqualifies from best anything because OTS camera offset causes intermittent visual feedback discrepancies. If the camera is behind your right shoulder, then obstacles on your right side can obscure your vision and prevent you from shooting at targets that are perfectly capable of seeing you and shooting at you. Your body has already cleared the obstacle but the camera hasn't, and neither has your crosshair. You can only shoot at the wall even though your gun points past it. Vice versa for camera being behind your left shoulder.

And before anyone says "there's a button for switching shoulders" -well, that is a temporary and unreliable solution for a deliberately implemented problem that shouldn't exist in the first place. Instead of having to choose between squatting down and dipping your balls in boiling water, and standing up and shoving your head up an elephant's asshole, how about standing somewhere else?? Why would you implement a camera that makes every t-intersection a flip of the coin, having you wonder if you're going to be able to shoot someone on the right side without them being able to return fire, or if you're going to get shot from the left side by someone else doing the same? Why would you want your bullets to be hitting railings instead of your target due to your crosshair pointing past the railings, but your gun pointing slightly to the side at the railings, with an ability to switch shoulders so you could repeat the same problem with a different camera angle? With classic Max Payne third person camera, those problems simply do not exist, and neither does a shoulder switch button.

Wow, I never even knew about this.

I've only just recently played through all four Uncharteds and it was a great time, but I only noticed that UC4 had multiplayer, and I'm worried I might not be able to access multiplayer on the others because I bought the Nathan Drake Collection.

I'll stay hopeful though. Perhaps I'll try it out later

I know a lot of UC2 fans think that way, they thought UC3 was too casual.

But by the time I started playing UC2, the servers were pretty much dead and I guess everyone had moved to UC3. They finally sorted the Hardcore mode which I think finally won over the majority UC2 fans.
