Wow this was tough. For me especially 80s because there were all the arcades, consoles just starting, home computers just starting, how can I choose from all those? Also 10s were tough because I've been gaming much less than previous decades and I don't want to pick something I've only played for an hour or seen someone else play. And I'm going to say 70s because I'm that f***ing old. So for what it's worth:
    70s Monaco GP
    80s Galaga
    90s DOOM
    00s Morrowind
    10s Skyrim

80's played a lot of arcade and c64, got into pc and amiga towards the end.
pac-man, gauntlet, ghosts 'n goblins, ghouls 'n ghosts, kung-fu master, punch out, commando, double dragon, final fight, crystal castles, galaga, outrun, bad dudes vs. dragon ninja...the list goes on and on.
c64 games like bruce lee, h.e.r.o., shogun, the apshai series, pirates!, giana sisters, bubble bobble, international karate, ik+, bionic commando, last ninja series, hawkeye, batman the movie, and dozens more.
on amiga and pc, all sierra and lucasarts games, shadow of the beast, ultima series, dungeon master, and the super Mario games..and...and I can't remember all of them

90's early on amiga, snes and pc, later on mostly psx and pc.
eye of the beholder series, moonstone, heimdall, more sierra and lucasarts, super Mario world, super castlevania iv, super Metroid, donkey kong country, Wolfenstein 3d, doom, quake, hexen, heretic,
resident evil series, silent hill, alone in the dark, rayman, wipeout, final fantasy series, tekken, streetfighter, Baldur's gate, planescape torment.....too many to chose from so i'll stop here

    00's played on most systems.
icewind dale, neverwinter nights, castle Wolfenstein, bioshock series....you know what....looking back at the last 19 years, there has been hundreds of games I've played worth mentioning.
but given time, i'm sure i'll see other people mention them here.
over the past 40 years there has been 2000 games worth playing, easily, even if it's in a genre you don't really care for, as long as it's well made it's still worth trying.
gonna check back now and then to see if others can remind me of some I've missed from the old days

The entire Thief trilogy is iconic stealth gaming at its best. The cutscenes were better in the first two games but the gameplay was better in the last - in my opinion, of course. The new game was a real turnoff when it first came out, but I tried it again last year and found that I was removed enough for the original content, and familiar enough with modern stealth games, to embrace the changes and accept it as a decent reboot. It will never be the classic that the originals are, but it's a solid stealth game with a few glaring flaws.

Probably "Baldur's Gate" for the 90s, as this was one of the first great isometric rpgs. Technically "Planescape Torment" released in Dec 1999, but I didn't play it until the 2000s so I won't include it.

The 2000s is a difficult era because a lot of amazing games were released over that decade. We had "Kotor", "Bioshock", Fallout 3", "Mass Effect", "Jade Empire", "Witcher" ... that has to be the hardest decade to choose from, but I have to go with the holdover from the last list, "Planescape: Torment" is the greatest game ever written and it opened my eyes to how Planescape - probably my all-time favorite rpg setting - was meant to be run. (Since PS:T is technically last decade, my honorable mention goes to "Knights of the Old Republic" for being one of the most iconic rpgs, ever)

In 2010-present I'm going to have to say "Witcher 3"; again, there have been a plethora of amazing games in that time, but Witcher was probably the best game in the rpg genre since Torment.
ngl, I actually forgot about Bioshock. I really loved that game as well. Fun and good story and the game over all was just pure fun

80's - Revenge of Defender (1988) - The first videogame I ever played and still my favorite 80's game because I haven't actually played any other games from the 80's. Great games didn't exist on the PC until 1990 anyway.
90's - Thief: The Dark Project (1998) - Probably the second best game that exists.
00's - Thief 2: The Metal Age (2000) - The actual best game that exists. If I can't pick a game from the same series then my favorite from the 00's is Half-Life 2.
10's - Fallout: New Vegas (2010) - Bethesda tried to convince me that doing Fallout in 3d is a bad idea but after the mess they started, Obsidian disproved their bullshit with an unfinished buggy trainwreck that's still lightyears ahead of Todd's trash.

I'm going to cheat and look at what's still relevant in my Steam library. There are so many games from the 80s and 90s that I did enjoy, but I don't remember them very well. These are the games I have put most hours into on Steam, so they are my favorites from each era.

    Shadowgate - 80s
    XCOM - 90s
    Diablo 2 + Lords of Destruction - 00s
    Civ V - 10s

Okay, I cheated a little. Diablo is not on Steam, but I loved the second game to death - especially with the DLC.

I didn't play the 1st Devil Survivor game, but 2 was awesome. I hope ATLUS comes out with a new entry, combining a Tactic/RPG with the monster capture/training mechanics is so amazing.

    Hmmm...

80's - unfortunately, being late to the party in terms of gaming, I never had much exposure to 80's games so I don't think I really played any that were memorable... :/ with the exception of Prince of Persia...!
90's - consequently, I didn't play especially many games from the 90's either, which is a pity, but Thief: the Dark Project, freakin' 007: Goldeneye, and that pair of Star Wars flight-sims that made anyone playing them feel a total badass
00's - too many to even contemplate! For me personally (as top of their respective archetypes): Deus Ex, Rome: Total War, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Assassin's Creed II... (man, fucking Mass Effect (is ooooooooooooold!) and special mention to Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2. And CounterStrike will be the only multiplayer experience I actually enjoyed...)
10's - this'll be easier at least: Mass Effect 2, Total War: Rome 2 (with all the trimmings), Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Dishonored, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag...

Gun to head I'd have to go for Thief, Rome: Total War (purely because of potential hours put in and the ease with which I, as an individual, can mod it) and Skyrim. Though I'll probably change my mind within a few minutes...
