Your way of playing: RTS

Tell me how you like and prefer to play Real Time Strategy games !

I am the base building kind of lad
I'll try to make the good looking, well protected base, surrounded by turrets or other stationary defence.
Also i like to do early-game ambushes. In the mid to late game i like to advance and hold positions with no-walk, suppression zones.
Usually i'll catch the enemy in one of those and then flank them with my ambush units.
While enemy gets caught fighting with the ambush, i'll advance my suppression unit deeper, leaving some stationary defence seated at previous position.
Usually i invest in cheap artillery to anihilate the suppresed units caught or to defend the base.
if enemy techs into artillery i use my ambush squad to gank 'em.

I can relate, but i found the middle ground and actually fun play: you basically rush to CPs, but instead of rushing with units, you build proxy bases
I love proxy bases and offensive stationary def

OH yeah Unit heist is fun as hell in any rts xD
AI survival is also fun, i like to do that in DoW and C&C games aside the multiplayer)

A bit similar to OP - slow n steady/base-focused. Often played Protoss in SC, so slowly building up and more or less just surviving. Priorities are resources, defense, building, more defense, surveillance & exploration, even more defense... all in order to make your way into late-game, where as we all know, Protoss is basically unbeatable. Woo!

One of my favorite pass-times is setting up as many easy computers as a map allows and killing a couple hours building whatever army I think is cool and just screwing around with the mechanics. Like in WC3 playing undead and using banshees to turn builder units to your team so you can build enemy altars and summon other factions heroes. Then using some crazy hodgepodge army to screw around on the map til Im bored. Great for micro practice.
Warcraft 3 remastered is on the horizon. Its nice to see the greatest RTS of all time getting some love and attention.

I'd say Airmech strike, very unusual take on rts, but it's free so worth checking out
Can't find any topping rts besides sc2, i'd recommend "wh40k dow 2 retribution" if it had promising amount of players right now, unsure about that one.

I am so happy there are other people who enjoy RTS games. My strategies in RTS's has changed from my early days play LOTR battle for middle earth 2. To attempting to compete in starcraft(only got to gold) I have found that actually implementing real strategies in modern day warfare is sometimes the best way to play. I will normally start by using a base unit which is very balanced just in case someone is toxic and cannon rushed you or to that nature of strategy. Once i have made sure my original base is safe i then make sure to find new resources. if possible i look for areas the are inaccessible bu normal means which lets me farm materials and not even worry about that base at least at the beginning. Once i have established an extra resource gathering zone i then proceed to creating outpost throughout the map. Having these outpost will give you the vision(information) in order to make decisions based on the unit composition found. Also most people cant resist destroying outpost. This will once again buy you time to prepare a counter strat. Once enough information is gathered about your enemy it is now time to act. Depending on how your opponent plays there are so many different strategies to implement. My go to is poking at a weaker outpost of the enemies. This usually make them send some type of force. once this force is sent try to understand the play style of your opponent. If they are aggressive take advantage of that. Sacriifice a few units. Make them think that they have you on the ropes then obliterate them with some form of trap. IMMEDIATELY after you have to destroy some portion of your opponents strength. Destroying main bases or ust obliterating their army. I press this part since i have been guilty of so many times not taking advantage of a weakened enemy. even if it cost some units take out something. Thats about how i play most of my rts's. Create a solid foundation to your army. Secure resources. Acquire information. Probe. And then act.


If anyone has suggestions on some good rts's please let me know i am always down to play something new!

I've never been very good at RTS. I'm a turn-based guy, and RTS always had way too many things in way too many places for me to quickly react to. Also, I loved building up massive bases, which is not the greatest strategy. Rush to control resources, and spam as many guys as possible worked better for me, but I didn't enjoy playing that way.

Zerging, basically. I like to build huge armies of cheap disposable units and swarm the enemy and hear a million guns/ claws/tentacles attack the enemy.

Zerg is faster, but I always loved the futuristic designs of the protoss. I think I played them solely on aesthetics.

I, on the other hand, like to kill large groups of units with small amount of units, dunno feels like #that_damn_tactical_superiority

In the hayday of my time of Star craft, I usually played protoss. Slow, but I built a swarm of units to completely decimate the enemy in one strike. I mostly did the same in red alert. I suppose I enjoyed the feeling of being unstoppable and the enemy being powerless to my swarm. So I guess I play a little sadistically.
