Good for you, you've figured out how to avoid something that brings people joy, I hope that works out for you.
There's nothing wrong with becoming emotionally involved in a Movie, Book, or Game - you're supposed to become emotionally involved in these mediums, that's part of the fun. Seeing as games are more interactive than either Movies or Books, it makes sense that people would become even more enamored of the characters and more invested in their own stories. The protagonist may not actually be the player, but the act of playing a character gives one a strong sense of ownership over them (just as we might strongly empathize with the protagonist of a book because we experience the world through their eyes). It's not childish to become invested in the characters, it's fantasy.

You're right, you act like a teenage boy, who becomes irritated when other people enjoy something you don't.

I had a terrible crush on Tali but the game wouldn't let me romance her with FemShep (and I can't play Shepard as a male) so she became my Shepard's unrequited lesbian crush. Thankfully Liara was a very well written romance (clearly the 'canon') so she made a fine second prize.
I also fell deeply in love with Elizabeth from Bioshock, so what if Booker can't romance her, I can still dream.
Leliana, in Dragon Age 1, was mesmerizing to me, but she became less likable in the subsequent games.
I adore Triss Merigold, unfortunately, while playing Witcher 3, I could not deny that Geralt and Yennefer felt like they belonged together, so I had to go that route. Not that Yennefer was a bad option, but she didn't tickle me the way Triss always had.
In the game "Enslaved: Odyssey to the West" the chemistry between Monkey and Trip is some of the best I've ever seen in a game. She's not my waifu but the characters complimented each other so well that they deserved a mention.Last edited by JackofTears; 01-20-2019, 04:18 AM.

Kurisu from Steins;Gate I think is a top tier waifu.

If visual novels don't count, then Tali from Mass Effect.
